Buyer beware.......2007-08-31
Tyson's not just financially conservative, but lets his personal and political bias slip in at times when it's not appropriate. He decries the entire Social Security system, indulges in the favorite right-wing hobby of bashing the New York Times's journalistic credibility (everyone else who makes incorrect predictions is simply honestly mistaken, but the NYT is an evil liberal machine, apparently), and urges parents NOT to pay for Junior's college education because "kids don't appreciate it."
As it's a "Dummies" book, there are many sections that just scratch the surface. None of it is really explained satisfactorily, and Tyson's poor narrative skills don't help. At one point he references the "facts you bring to bare [sic]" on your financial situation. Investing for the Nude would be a catchy title indeed.
Money management.......2007-06-15
Second time around. I bought one of the first editions of this book back in 1997 or 1998. The 4 th edition is a little more up to date as far as the mutual funds/bond funds. This is the best book out there for someone who is about to be in charge of there financies(ie. graduating from school or getting married). If you can discipline your spending this will help you accumalate assets.

Like many of the Dummies books, Investing for Dummies really provides a great overview into the market, and various securities. A great starting book for people interested in expanding their knowledge of how the market works. I highly recommend, especially paired with the Wall Street Journals Guide to Understanding Money and Investing...
A True Textbook.......2007-04-19
I received the book at the library. I have never read a "Dummie" book. I certainly obtained a real education. I have been an investor for many years but in todays world there are so many new "Words" and jargon I thought it would be a good read. As I progressed I realized the book was older and ordered a up to date from Amazon. I will always use it for reference and will read it again as I have this one. I would suggest anyone wanting to understand how to purchase stock and operate in the market read this book. You will understand a lot when you do.

Of the many "management" books I have read, Ms. Segil is the first to clearly articulate an approach that is critical in today's business environment--look at the behavior and motivation of the leader first. It is refreshing that she emphasizes the values and behaviors of the leader in the Ten Essential Traits and also provides the tools to build a foundation. I recommend this book highly for managers who are ready to put down their organizational charts and first look at themselves to facilitate change.

Roth to Riches is a must read for anyone who has ever considered or currently owns an IRA. Written in plain, understandable English (my native tongue), Mr. Bledsoe demonstrates the advantages and disadvantages of both the ordinary and the Roth IRA's. In this book, unlike other books that are also written in my native tongue but which make me wonder if English is in fact my native tongue, Mr. Bledsoe displays a unique ability to explain technical tax and financial planning concepts with candor and clarity. This book is interesting, informative and easy to understand. A bargain at this price. Thanks for the insights.
Some crucial points are no longer valid due to new regs........1998-11-09
This would have been a very excellent book had publication been withheld until after the Taxpayers' Relief Act of 1998 had been signed into law. Mr. Bledsoe was aware there were going to be important changes and he provideded a form in the back of the book, that the reader can use to send for an update on the the new regulations. Unfortunately the turn arround time for the update is quite slow. As the book reads in its present form, some very important areas are no longer accurate and an unwary reader could be lured into making a mistake in choosing a Roth IRA.
An easy-to-read book on Roth IRAs that's also comprehensive........1998-08-27
This is the first consumer-oriented book published (July, 1997) about the Roth IRA. As it turns out, it is a superb effort and one that other authors will be hard pressed to match with future Roth IRA titles. The author obviously spent many months fine-tuning his work. As the editor of the Roth IRA Web Site, I read this book in well under two hours and found it to be a remarkably easy-to-read book. One doesn't expect books on topics such as Roth IRAs to be pleasant reads, but this book was both fun-to-read and informative at the same time! I also gave the book to several others to read (including one person who had no idea how IRAs worked) and they confirmed my judgement. This is a great book on both traditional IRAs and Roth IRAs.
From a technical viewpoint, the information presented appears to be quite accurate and comprehensive. Although the Roth IRA technical corrections were not yet signed into law when the book was published, the author was obviously quite familiar with the proposed changes and he does reference the more important provisions. (The last page of the book provides a form to send in for a free report on the final Roth regulations when available.)
The book is 198 pages (8½" x 11" size) with the actual text running through page 90. Pages 91 through 121 are what the author calls Roth Conversion Advantage charts. Most of the rest of the book consists of a reprint of IRS Publication 590, the IRS explanation of IRAs. After you see the IRS explanation of how traditional IRAs work, you will like Roth IRAs even more!

This book succeeds where many others fail: It does an excellent job of breaking into layman's terms the most complex investing and financial concepts, while at the same time making the whole thing completely relatable for someone who knows *nothing* about investing. That is a talent many wish they had. This is no mean feat when you consider all the jargon you have to learn. Now, imagine having fun while doing it! Wow! Eric Tyson, eat your heart out!
Sure, it?s been a while since this book first came out, so you know it needs a little updating...get over it! I still give the book five well-deserved stars. I appreciate the authors for writing such an awesome little book, as reading a book is a big investment of time, and reading this book was definitely worth it.

Before I bought this book, I was probably like a lot of young people out there... ya get paid from work and you go blow it on the weekend with your friends at the mall. You just manage to get your bills paid off, and wonder why you can never seem to get a decent amount put away in your savings account? People, wake up! This is the time you should be saving for your future, or you'll regret that you didn't when you get older! I bought this book with determination not to spend every dollar I make and how to put my money towards my future. The book gives excellent explainations on the stock market and how it works, and even explains all those Wall Street symbols in a way that it's actually fun to read! It explains everything from savings accounts, to stocks and bonds, to IRAs! When I was finished reading the book, I was so glad I had read it when I did, because the later you wait, the more you're wasting time! I recommend this book to all! Read it and you'll be glad that you did!

This is an excellent book. It makes so easy to understand - all those complicated stock terms, author makes use of beautiful examples from time to time. It is a must have for every person who wants to invest money in stocks etc. (may be, except the ones, whose primary carrier is stocks or stock trading). I myself bought and sold stock over the last few years but never understood the terminology completely. It is nice to have it in my library - Thanks to the authors.

The book offers basic information on how to invest and save money, but, that's all it does. The book is more appropriate for someone at a later stage of their life, and for someone who has no idea how one should save or invest money. If you already know the basic information about investing, then this book is not for you.
A Primer on Common Sense Investments and Financial Info.......1996-05-26
If ever there were a standard primer for financial information, my vote would be this book. What a wonderful gift this book would
make for a newly married couple, or even a daughter who has just graduated high school or college. A son, too for that matter! As
someone who has never had much extra money, I just recently graduated from college and am now pursuing full time employment, I know
that when I begin bringing in that second income, that I will want to have some education on what to do with it. I bought this book for that purpose.
It is a basic information book that provides vital facts and figures to anyone needing advice in regards to insurance, 401K, stocks, bonds, retirement and ect.
For someone who has just a limited knowledge of these topics, this book will be a Godsend. A child could read and understand the concepts presented in this book.
It gives resources for more information as well. Pick up this book and you will expand your financial horizons! The book is written in a very casual, witty and motherly type fashion.
It will make you warm and fuzzy! And perhaps even fatten your wallet

The aim of this pint size book is to skill-up insurance salespersons. Instead, it is a handbook for consumers to talk the talk of insurance. Had I read the description of this book closer, I might have picked up on it's diminutive size, small page count and shortness on sales education.
