Book Description
Designed to form the basis of an undergraduate course in mathematical finance, this book builds on mathematical models of bond and stock prices and covers three major areas of mathematical finance that all have an enormous impact on the way modern financial markets operate, namely: Black-Scholes’ arbitrage pricing of options and other derivative securities; Markowitz portfolio optimization theory and the Capital Asset Pricing Model; and interest rates and their term structure. Assuming only a basic knowledge of probability and calculus, it covers the material in a mathematically rigorous and complete way at a level accessible to second or third year undergraduate students. The text is interspersed with a multitude of worked examples and exercises, so it is ideal for self-study and suitable not only for students of mathematics, but also students of business management, finance and economics, and anyone with an interest in finance who needs to understand the underlying theory.
Customer Reviews:
Mathematics for Finance: A useful tool for the unskillled investor.......2007-03-19
I enjoyed reading the book and solving exercises in it. I have a Ph.D.in chemistry and my wife and I did our his and her's MBA in the 1990s. I wanted to learn more concepts in finance and needed an easy entry, something I could enjoy, and without spending much money. The book by Capinski came recommended from a friend who teaches Economics at Cal State. I can speak for myself: I feel reasonably informed and I feel the book gave me concepts I can use to handle my own portfolio.
In the future, this text should be offered with an interactive CD that contains Xls, matrix, calculus, and graphing capabilities so one (I) can visualize the outcomes of proposed solutions.
Incoherent.......2007-01-18
Anyone can scribble a bunch of equations on paper and call it a book. Without sufficient context, they are useless.
Insufficient and disappointing. Not even a good introductury text........2006-05-15
As a graduate student in Financial Engineering I have found this book useless.
The title of the book is "Mathematics for Finance", but can you find in it even an elementary introduction to the stochastic processes? No. Ditto for the Ito's lemma and many other topics. The derivation of the Black Scholes formula is just sketched, and the insight that you can get from it is very limited.
Nevertheless, I wouldn't mind these limitations if this book provided a clear introduction to more advanced topics: unfortunately this book is not good even in that. In comparison to other textbooks the theorems and definitions are convoluted and do not go straight to the point. For example, in Shreve's "Stochastic Calculus for Finance" or Baxter & Rennie "Financial Calculus" the Fundamental Theorem of Asset Pricing is stated in this way: "In a market with risk neutral probability there is no arbitrage". Can you find such a simple and explanatory definition in Capinski's book? Not at all. The theorem at page 83 (you can see it yourself by searching inside the book) basically says the same thing using 8 lines of text and little financial intuition.
The only good thing that I can say about this book is that all exercises are resolved.
Overall, "Mathematics for Finance" has been a big disappointment: it doesn't have either the mathematical depth of Shreve's books or the conciseness in explaining financial concepts of Baxter & Rennie.
Whatever is the level of education that you are pursuing, graduate or undergraduate, I don't see any point in using it.
Great Book for Undergrad Quants.......2005-08-29
Mathematics for Finance (An Introduction to Financial Engineering) is a book intended for undergrad students "IN MATHEMATICS" or other discipline with a relative high mathematical content.
The book assumes some basic notion of Calculus and Probability Theory and it is focused more on the mathematics than in its theory and application of Finance. If you are looking to dwell into the mathematics (Proof of Equations) this is a great book, but if you are looking for a book that is rich in theory and in application then you should consider "Option, Future and Other Derivatives" or "Quantitative Methods for Finance" as an alternative. Both books are "a most" for any finance student and are of great help. Now if you want an introduction into the mathematics behind Finance then this book is a perfect purchase.
Important to state that all the problems presented in this book are solved meaning that it is great for self teaching. Marek Capinsi and Thomas Zastawniak have done a great job on this book.
I gave it four stars, because it has room for impovement.
Joining the chorus.......2005-08-03
I can only echo the other reviewers. As far as I can tell this book has no serious competition. This is an excellent introduction to mathematical finance for those with a solid undergraduate level understanding of higher math but without graduate level exposure. I agree that it is ideal for self study as that is exactly what I am using it for. The price is right especially in contrast with its overpriced brethren. Five stars!
Book Description
1
Statistics of Financial Markets presents in a vivid yet concise style the necessary statistical and mathematical background for Financial Engineers and introduces to the main ideas in mathematical finance and financial statistics. Topics covered are, among others, option valuation, financial time series analysis, value-at-risk, copulas, and statistics of the extremes.
The underlying structure of the book, i.e. basic tools in mathematical finance, financial time series analysis and applications to given problems of financial markets, allows the book to be used as a basis for lectures, seminars and even crash courses on the topic.
A full set of transparencies can be downloaded using the registration card at the back of the book. The registration card also allows the use of the e-book version with links to world wide computing servers.
Customer Reviews:
Great intutive introduction to stochastic calculus.......2006-06-17
This book was such a relief after going through tens of books/lectures notes on stochastic calculus. Most math books give the theory behind Ito calculus (martingales, measure theory etc.), but fail to give the motivation and reasoning behind abstract definitions. This book does an excellent job in deriving many seemingly-complicated math formulas (or, theorems) using intuitive terms. It is an excellent read for people who have a reasonable background in probability theory, and are wishing to learn stochastic calculus (plus finance). I strongly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn the rudiments of Ito integral and see its applications in finance.
Great introduction to the Value at Risk measures.......2005-10-14
Got the friendly yellow paperback version. The book is in three major parts; Options, Time series and then Value at Risk.
The first section starts out well with an overview of Stochastic Processes and then moves on to Stochastic Integrals and Differential Equations. All of this is motivation to help with the pricing of Options, starting with European, then American and moving onto Exotics and Bond Options. It covers all the major points, though it is a little limited in the Exotics, it does have a good references to more thorough works.
The second section on time series works with ARIMA, ARCH and GARCH models.
The third section (labeled Selected Financial Applications) is mostly about the VAR though is has some really good commentary on the Volatility of Option Portfolios.
An added bonus is that you can download the PDF version of the book, and all the data for the examples from the web, with quite a neat one-time license.
I would recommend this book to people needing a good overview of the subjects listed above, and as a handy reference.

Helpful with problem-solving.......2002-10-01
Contrary to the other review, I find this book very helpful. I haven't gone yet to look at the reliability of the studies cited in the book, however there is a point to the "nude" chart on page 79. It is to point out that people respond consciously and unconsciously to differently to certain body types and whether people want to admit to it or not, it is true. I found the information they gave on how to problem-solve very helpful and ways in which to talk with others for effective group discussions or meetings. Although I am in the field of education, it is helpful for teachers in that we meet with parents, other educators, and other professionals all the time, making effective communication very important, especially with difficult parents.
Communicating in Business and Professional Settings.......2000-02-24
This is a horrible book, and I encourage professors looking for serious organizational communication texts to look elsewhere. The book is dominated by unintentionally hilarious "studies", superfluous instruction on how to be politically correct, redundant space-wasting charts, and confusing self-contradiction. The authors, two Professors of Communications from the University of South Alabama, see fit to include such valuable learning tools as a drawing entitled, "several body shapes" (pg 79) which depicts 4 nude women from the back, each with a different degree of body fat, and Exhibit 4.7 (pg 86) which cites a "study" to show us that Native, Asian, African, and Hispanic Americans favor "Harmony with the nature and environment" while Whites favor "Mastery over nature and the environment" Ignoring the deep dubiousness of this point, I think that most of this book is a waste of time, unfit for any higher learning. In fact, I find this book intellectually offensive.

A profound guide to total leadership in all aspects of life.......1999-11-07
Intrigued by the title, I picked up this book and could not put it down until I finish reading the last sentence. This book provides the most valuable philosophical advice you will ever receive about the balance between the assertive energy and the passive energy that rule all aspects of our life. Since we spend most of our wake-up hours at work, the principles outlined in the book become exceptionally beneficial to anyone who is seeking for "spirituality" and "balance" at work. Learn and Apply, (yes Apply), those principles and you will notice the improvement of the quality of your life. The improvement will not be first in the sense of how much more money you will earn, rather how much happier and how much more capable you are becoming. When you reach that point, before you know, you are on the track for significant career advancement and higher earning power. When you bring this newly developed total self-leadership to your life outside of work, you will notice that no matter how many activities you engage yourself in, you will always have the peace, the center and the wisdom with you. This book should be made a required reading for all companies, from top executives to the very junior staff. It can also be a great gift to someone you really love and care about his/her own personal fulfillment.

Product Description
In recent years, stock market investing has been proven unstable and not very rewarding. In fact, many people have seen their retirement and personal holding accounts dwindle. This new book provides an alternate to investors. It provides detailed information on how to put money to work in a relatively safe private mortgage investment with a high return of 12 to 15 percent (or more) in most cases. Private mortgages have grown into a multi-billion-dollar industry. This market allows investors to earn substantially higher yieldswhile offering the security of real property to back the loan. Private mortgages have become an important fixed income vehicle for many investors with their personal funds, equity, and self-directed IRA accounts. Private mortgage investing isnt for the get-rich-quick type of person. However, you can comfortably double your money every 4 to 6 years. For example, should you invest in your self-directed IRA and re-invest as notes pay off? $100,000 at 12 percent grows to over $200,000 in six years, to $500,000 in 13 years and to over $1 million in 19 years. Private mortgage loans are backed by real property. Generally, you would not lend more than 55 percent on the value of the property, thus the investment is again relatively safe. Instead of concentrating on the borrowers credit history, private mortgage lenders concentrate their investment decisions on the real property itself. However, like any business or investment, there are a lot of details to learn, and you do not need to learn them on your own. Learning them on your own can be costly. In this economic environment of very low interest rates, you can still earn high yields with virtually little or no risk to your investment.
Customer Reviews:
Solid guide to private mortgage investing.......2007-03-27
Clark's book covers the basics that any investor will need to know, including why to choose private mortgage investing (and what your other options are) and how to go about doing it. It covers all of the different aspects of mortgages such as fees, interest rates, and even has handy tables to help you out. The appendices are the best feature as they have all the forms you will need as well as a comprehensive glossary (very useful!). This book covers everything you need to know to succeed, but were too scared to ask about. It even has case studies and examples explained with real numbers that help tie the whole thing together. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to start earning money with private mortgage investments.
Invest in this book today.......2007-01-03
This book is straightforward and gives you a tremendous amount of information about investing in private mortgages. Unlike a lot of books of the investment genre, it does not try to sell you on services provided by the authors. In fact, I wish the book had a bit more reference material for making contacts to get started with this type of investing.
Desk Reference for ANY Investor!.......2006-12-20
Clark and Tabacchi have created a masterpiece of an educational and supportive tool that should become a desk reference for any investor from amateur through industry mogul. By providing the reader with an organized and easy to understand manual on the otherwise opaque investing industry, Clark & Tabacchi display their expertise in this subject matter by guiding the beginning investor through the processes of choice from traditional savings through stocks and bonds on to the lucrative market of Mortgage Investing.
The explanation of the reasoning behind the private mortgage industry that tells you why you would want to find yourself in this industry gets the juices flowing and interests peaked. Your journey includes a thorough exposure to strategies of Mortgage Investing, this resource is a must have companion.
A complete and honest investment guide.......2006-10-20
This is a well organized and very easy to understand investment manual, whether you are a newcomer or an old pro in the business of real estate. Included case studies and tables are effective in illustrating the process and possible outcomes of private mortgage investing. The author clearly explains all of the parameters to be considered when taking advantage of this type of investment opportunity. Points, fees, and procedures relevant to mortgages are explored in great detail. Safety measures, tax considerations, and foreclosure processes are also discussed, with examples of what could go wrong, and how to avoid losing your investment. This is a complete and honest assessment of private mortgage investing, with excellent references and suggestions of how to get started or increase the success of your investment activity.
Everything you need to know to succeed at private mortgage investing.......2006-10-10
Before reading Private Mortgage Investing, I knew very little about private mortgages. However, after reading it, I feel as though I really have the information I need if I decide to take this path of investing. This book provides an in-depth look at every aspect of private mortgage investing from getting the most out of your IRA to ways to invest your money. One of the most helpful sections of the book was the discussion on how to find potential borrowers - and discovering there are plenty of them out there. In fact, it was surprising to learn that 1.9 million homes were purchased by investors in 2004 - that's 23 percent of all home sales!
For me, the best part of this book is the case studies. Reading about an 18-year-old who is already investing her money and a 73-year-old who turned to private mortgage investing is an inspiration - it proves that anyone can invest their money in private mortgages and make a nice profit. Furthermore, the case studies provide valuable tips - such as the importance of working with a reputable, trustworthy broker - from investors who know what it takes to succeed.
There are also eight exhaustive appendices, one of which includes sample forms, among them an example of a mortgage note and a mortgage commitment letter. The second appendix features a complete loan package from a broker. Everything you need to get started is in this book! All in all, Private Mortgage Investing is a must-read for anyone interested in really learning how to get into private mortgage investing.

Using your 401 to invest.......2005-09-26
I think that I know less about the topic after having read the book than before I read it. The first few chapters offered some vague generalities on the topic. The last several were merely examples of forms supposedly used in such transactions. While the author may know the topic (judging from his bio), this book is useless.
