Ignore the Bad Reviews Below.......2006-08-15
I am quite shocked by all of the poor reviews below. This text is actually very good, in that it address several topics that Grinold and Kahn do not, mainly utility theory (and its role in investor decision making), the international CAPM, and the Black-Litterman model. First, the presentation of the investment decision making process by Litterman from an economics (utility maximization) view point is right on target. Too often portfolio theory is simply presented in a pure mathematical finance format that, while teaching the mechanics, leaves the end user incapable of understanding the implications of the analysis they are performing. Additionally, Litterman's presentation of the international CAPM and universal hedge models are very well done and extremely important. Finally, the Black-Litterman model has become mainstream (it is incorporated into the Ibbotson software) and is completely ignored by Grinold!
I own both Litterman and Grinold, and if you can afford both I would buy both because Grinold does a nice job simply presenting the mathematics, but then so do so many other texts.
Crap.......2005-12-17
A couple of chps from here are reqd reading for the CFA Level III exam (last exam for CFA charter). I was expecting something MUCH better from GSAM who fancy themselves as the best on the street.
Thankfully, CFAI provided us with the chps and we did not have to purchase the book. Save your money and buy Grinold instead.
All Blather and No Substance.......2005-07-12
The boys at GSAM clearly wrote this book as an "alternative" to Grinold and Kahn and to help promote the group as the seek to raise assets.
Grinold and Kahn work at Barclays Global Investors, GSAM's biggest competitor, and they wrote a first-rate book on how to do quantitative management. Their book has become the standard, the must read, and is required by the CFA exam. This obviously bugged them to no end. It's no fun to see your biggest competitor getting tons of accolades. So they did what anyone with a big ego does: they wrote their own book, this book.
Only problem is this book STINKS. What's the matter with it you ask? It has no content. The boys at GSAM were so scared about divigulging anything that could help a competitor (or the market) that they didn't really want to SAY anything.
Now how do you not say anything but still write a book, you ask? Excellent question! The answer is you talk in infuriatingly broad generalities about very general topics.
For example, on the topic of how do you actually trade the portfolio, they come up with such gems of wisdom as:
"Tradomg is the process of executing the orders derived in the portfolio constrution step. To trade a list of stocks efficiently, investors must balance opportunity costs and execution price against market impact costs." [page 431]
This knowledge anyone who has ever thought for 2 seconds about trading knows. The real value might come if they gave you some cool way to think about measuring opportunity costs, ex-ante. Or a nice way of estimating market impact costs. Do they do either? Of course not! Just more and more banal talk.
The book is filled with millions of other examples. One should use a decay weight in estimating covariance matrices. How should we choose that decay weight is of course never mentioned or discussed!
They tell us when choosing between factors to predict returns, "the real challenge is to winnow down the list of factors to a parsimonious set." Okay, how might I do that you GSAM gods? They never ever tell you [see page 420]
You get the point, just lots of blather and really no content.
Save your money and don't buy this book. They don't need your money they have enough already. And it's not like you are getting knowledge or anything valuable in return.
Oldschool.......2003-11-24
Nicely written from a journalistic perspective but rather old fashioned. Many mistakes and deliberate false claims in order to suit product interests of Goldman Sachs. Examples:
In the chapter on asset liability management there is always an analytical case for equities. However the only reason is that GS does not allow duration as a choice variable. Otherwise beta (in their formula) would become one and the optimal equity allocation is zero. Accidental? I doubt it.
They also claim to have found (earlier) a better method than Stambaugh on dealing with missing data. However either you publish or you shut up.
Waste of time for serious quants
The definitive equilibrium investing title.......2003-08-20
My highest commendations to the asset management team at Goldman Sachs. They have come together and created a highly comprehensive tome that covers all the bases within the realm of modern investment theory. Their solid equilibrium approach is applied to all areas, from traditional investments to alternative asset classes, from institutional funds to private wealth, using analysis and real world applications. Incredibly thorough, extremely recommended.

Book Description
On the Internet, rumors, misinformation, leaks, smear campaigns, rogue Web sites, and other high-profile postings are epidemic. Companies and the issues that affect them are being publicly discussed by more than 30 million people worldwide. There are, however, no editors in cyberspace. Communication is direct, unfiltered, and fast.
The initial reaction to an adverse situation on the Internet is panic, fear, and a strong desire to shut them down. The reality is that these situations are opportunities for companies to publicly demonstrate their character by resolving customer problems that may have gone unresolved or getting their side of the story across in a way that was not possible before.
There are two points of origination for Internet crises. Mrs. Fields Cookies was once falsely rumored on Hard Copy and CNN to have supplied free cookies to O.J. Simpson's criminal trial victory party. Within eight minutes of the Hard Copy broadcast, a boycott of the company was being organized on the Internet. Intel's Pentium well-known chip flaw, on the other hand, took three weeks of discussion on the Internet's Usenet newsgroups to build up enough momentum before it appeared as a story on the front page of The Wall Street Journal.
Crises that originate in traditional media that jump to the Internet, such as the false Mrs. Fields rumor, grow quickly and require less work on the part of the organizers to build support. Unlike traditional media however, where the journalist serves as intermediary and filter, the Internet enables both sides to tell their stories directly to the affected audiences.
While the Internet possesses the ability to catalyze, organize, and polarize large numbers of people quickly, the very nature of the medium ensures that corporate activism originating on the Internet, such as the Intel debacle, will almost universally start out at a manageable level. Webmasters of activist Web sites have the same challenge as their corporate brethren: if you build it but don't tell anyone about it, no one will come. Companies that monitor the electronic bulletin boards on the Internet and on commercial online services such as Prodigy, CompuServe, Microsoft Network, and America Online routinely discover the postings of disgruntled customers, employees, investors, and other activists seeking to build grassroots support for their causes.
Herein lies the opportunity to resolve the situation, before it grows to a scope that costs a company serious dollars and reputational damage. There are three steps to follow for identifying and neutralizing potentially destructive, widely disseminated Internet rumors and misinformation: Diagnosis, Prescription, and Treatment.

Customer Reviews:
There are much better books..........2007-04-15
As a professional chef and culinary educator, it would be hard for me to recommend this book. The ratios are not correct for a basic mirepoix for stock. They list 1/2# each of carrots and celery and only a 1/4# of onions...mirepoix is classicaly 1 part celery (stalk or root), 1 part carrots and 2 parts onions or leeks.
A student or apprentice would be better off with The New Professional Chef or Professional Cooking. If you would like the true classic methods,Le Guide Culinaire by Escoffier is second to none.
No Nonsense Recipes.......2000-12-22
I have recently replaced this old standard with a new, updated model. It is important to know a little about cooking and the basic French techniques before trying this book. It then becomes the most concise, precise and thorough guide to virtually anything you want to prepare. It has stood the test of time. If you agree that the single most important cookbook in your library is The Joy of Cooking then The Compendium would be number two. A great collection of most classic recipes without all the rhetoric.
A good thorough and very organized book........1996-05-19
I found this book a few years back in a second hand bookstore.
So far it has become one of my preferred cookbooks.
It has most of the "classical" recipies.
The only faults are that it leaves many techniques undescribed
and that it has a rather inconsitent translation to metric
measures.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Resource..........2005-06-09
I'm not sure what the previous reviewer was talking about (perhaps he read another book). This book is extremely useful, and it is an excellent resource for career changers!
A very good title, but a disappointing content........2000-04-26
Being "mid-career" can mean many things, but one meaning is a fact: You are a seasoned worker, getting older and being less attractive to new employers. Therefore, I expected from this book some guidance for people who are not so experienced with modern ways to apply for a job. Let's say some tricks to become more attractive.
Unfortunately, this book is not of big help.
Only the first 28 pages give explicit advise to the reader on how to set up a resume. The advise is extremely basic and not at all adapted for being "mid-career". Several times the author advises on WHAT TO DO WITHOUT WORK EXPERIENCE. Nonsense.
The second part, the resume part, has impressive 100 pages. It presents resumes of different styles and lay outs. However, all are uncommented. The reader has to do its own interpreting of what the system behind all this variety is. Here I am missing the guidance of an experienced professional who can help you to extract the style that fits you best. ...at least some pros and cons.
Even a "mid-career" would probably like to know that resumes are scanned into data bases. However, there is no comment mentioning the use of key words for electronic resumes or what to do with the ASCII format cutting your lines.
The third part, as important as your resume part, is the cover letter. It has about 20 pages presenting 20 uncommented examples. Here too my question is: What is this for?

Oustanding for the Baby Boomers.......2006-05-19
This is the Baby Boomers version of Bolles What Color is my Parachutte. A must read for all career changers, those downsized and all others interested in career progression and growth. Kudos to the authors on this timely and fabulous book for the Boomers.

Boom or Bust - a must read for boomers and others.......2006-04-05
I've just finished reading Boom or Bust! and now I'm going to review it again and fill out the worksheets. I found it to be a very inspiring and informative book. It's also a realistic book. The authors make the point that there are many options out there ,but you have to put some work into it to see what would work for you. Each person needs to study and analysis what they want to do and what they're good at doing and then see how they can combine that into a new career opportunity.
A Career Guide for the Rest of Us.......2006-02-26
"Boom or Bust!" helped me in many ways to develop and implement a job search campaign. First of all, it led me to a better understanding of the changes in the workplace that have adversely affected my career and made me think about my orientation toward work in general. The exercises to prioritze my interests and, thereby, match them with my talents, caused me to examine my own thoughts and feelings about the type of work I really want to do going forward, and also reinforced some career deliberations I've had but have hesitated acting upon.
The section on career options provides brief snapshots of alternatives to consider and gave me a starting point for my own research. The final section concentrates on marketing yourself and offers excellent tips on how to communicate your work experience to employers and referral sources. As a Baby Boomer, I appreciate the large paperback format and the legible type size. "Boom or Bust!" belongs on every mature worker's desk.

Customer Reviews:
I had this book, but I sold it on eBay .......2006-07-29
I bought this book last year and I could not believe what a mess the book was. There was no structure, no information, total mess. I tried to figure out what kind of method the author(s) used for coming up with a table of contents, but failed. If you see this on eBay, don't waste your money. There are a lot of copies floating around from India as that seems to be the only place where this is printed now.
A waste of good money.......2005-09-08
I think this author must have been given the title without knowing anything about SAP. It is a total disaster, nothing flows, no information, nothing. Save your money and take a SAP MM consultant out for dinner. You will get more information and you get food too.
Absolutely null !!!.......2004-12-31
I would like to put 0 star in your ranking, but this choice doesn't exist.
I am so disappointed that I could pay about (...) for a such inefficient book!
No informative, only banalities and obvious sentences.
I can't believe how some people could make a many in a such unfair manner.
Don't buy it! Never!
Don't even think about buying this ..........2002-10-24
Very, very bad. Nearly of no use. Please, respect also the comments from other reviewers. I bought it during my SAP Academy, when I was strugling to get some information. But, unfortunately a disaster even for a beginner, not to mention someone who works in SAP consulting business.
Not usefull and outdated.......2002-08-29
I found SAP R/3 Help file is much better than this book. This book is based on older version and has no configuration instruction at all. It only creates confussion especially for new readers. I won't recommend this book to anybody.

Intergrated Marketing Communications - The Holistic Approach.......2000-04-20
This book is very student orientated. It meets its objective as a CIM marketing communications subject book. Have very good details. Only problem for non EU community is that all the examples and references are mostly UK related. Would also advise future readers to have a base understanding on the topics or may need other books to develop understanding for the topics. Many abbreviations for the "subject" not futher elabotated eg: DAGMAR, JICNARS. (JICNARS is a readership survey but not explained what the abbrevation stands for, so with people like me not being in the UK do not know what it stands for! - or the author expects you to know it!) The indepth study of the book covers very detailed areas and even " future gazing" where the author anticipates some of the important factors likely to affect the field of communications.

Customer Reviews:
Clearly a Market Leader!.......2003-01-03
An excellent informative resource, Chris Fill's 'Marketing Communications' is a comprehensive yet easily readable text the content of which is suitable for both marketing student and practitioner. Now in its third edition, it has improved yet again in both structure and content with rearrangement of chapters into a more logical order and with updated content.
The text has detailed content but succeeds in achieving a theoretical authority which is translated into strategic approaches and practical application, and supported with clearly related examples and mini-case studies. The marketing communications mix and related issues are covered with focus on the individual marketing communications elements and on the critical activity of planning and managing their integration. For students of studying for marketing examinations in higher education and professional Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) / American Marketing Association (AMA) level, this is an essential study text.
For business and marketing practioners requiring a marketing communications reference text this is a valuable resource. Those who do or wish to work in specific marketing communications fields such as advertising or promotion with find this a good background springboard to more specialised reading. Overall a highly recommeded text for students, professionals and business people in marketing and/or business. When its time is due, the fourth edition will be equally welcomed. An excellent marketing text and clearly a market leader.

Book Description
Most people tend to react to the term "estate planning" in two ways: they become uncomfortable or they show no interest. Either response is a huge mistake. If you care about your family and everything you1ve been working to acquire and build, then you need this book. In just a dozen short chapters, Mark R. Alvig and Thomas M. Petracek, two certified financial planners who reside and work in Minnesota and specialize in estate planning, explain the essentials of estate planning in terms which are easy to understand. They take a difficult legal and financial area and make good sense out of it.This book, which has been frequently featured Sunday mornings on WCCO radio1s Your Money with Bruce Helmer, presents what you need to know about estate taxes, wills, trusts, retirement plans, Medicare, Medicaid, and other basics of estate planning. For people who own a business, they1ve included a chapter with strategies for taking care of that business when the owner is no long! er around to do so. And, because estate planning changed recently, with the Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997, the authors detail the effects of that significant legislation. For the family owned farm they examine the Special Land Use Valuation, Internal Revenue Code Section 2023A and its potential role when being used to reduce estate taxes.

Waste of Money.......2006-03-08
Complete waste of Money. Topics discussed are outdated and morally questionable. Would NOT recommend to any relatives or friends, let along perfect strangers.
Good Practical Advise.......2001-03-22
One of the easiest to read estate planning books that I have read. I recommend this book for anyone with a taxable estate that needs to understand the issues/concepts of estate planning.
Easy to read, understand & apply, informative and helpful........1999-11-03
I was looking for financial planning advice that was not intimidating and easy for someone not in a "money & numbers" profession to understand. I found just what I needed in this book. The authors provided information in a common-sense, conversational manner. It was arranged so I could find exactly the topics that apply to me and my family. I found good advice, answers I was looking for and learned alot along the way. I was pleasantly surprised that a subject I had always veered away from could really be presented in such a "user-friendly" format.
Very poor advice on a topic that people need counsel on........1999-10-19
The authors attempt to portray financial strategies that many CPA's and financial planners agree are questionable if not illegal.
