The LIBOR Market Model in Practice (The Wiley Finance Series)
ASIN: 0691089736 |
Book Description
In recent years, interest-rate modeling has developed rapidly in terms of both practice and theory. The academic and practitioners' communities, however, have not always communicated as productively as would have been desirable. As a result, their research programs have often developed with little constructive interference. In this book, Riccardo Rebonato draws on his academic and professional experience, straddling both sides of the divide to bring together and build on what theory and trading have to offer.
Rebonato begins by presenting the conceptual foundations for the application of the LIBOR market model to the pricing of interest-rate derivatives. Next he treats in great detail the calibration of this model to market prices, asking how possible and advisable it is to enforce a simultaneous fitting to several market observables. He does so with an eye not only to mathematical feasibility but also to financial justification, while devoting special scrutiny to the implications of market incompleteness.
Much of the book concerns an original extension of the LIBOR market model, devised to account for implied volatility smiles. This is done by introducing a stochastic-volatility, displaced-diffusion version of the model. The emphasis again is on the financial justification and on the computational feasibility of the proposed solution to the smile problem. This book is must reading for quantitative researchers in financial houses, sophisticated practitioners in the derivatives area, and students of finance.
Customer Reviews:
why bother.......2003-02-14
It's hard to believe a reviewer with such a myopic view of Derivatives pricing could go through the whole book, understood it and found time to rate it. Mindblowing waste of time !
Few hundreds years ago, he would have recommended burning the Madmen claiming the earth was round.
Anyway, while Derivatives Pricing achieves little for the welfare of mankind, the recent need for assets based on ever complex market scenarios calls for a more refined pricing methodology. There no supply and demand here, only customers who want hedge/trade/tradge assets /liabilities and traders who need to make sure their firms don't go burst when market move.
The author answers that demand by formatting and publishing his papers.
rebonato does it again.......2003-01-18
My avid reading kept jostling out superb hot ideas from this book. Rebonato carries out a comprehensive survey of the LIBOR market model. He tackles historical background, calibration, and effective implementation. The later chapters also cover extensions to the LIBOR market model to take account of smile and skew. In particular, there is extensive discussion of the cutting-edge Joshi-Rebonato stochastic-vol, displaced-diffusion LIBOR market model.
If you are working on the pricing of exotic interest rate derivatives, this book is a must buy.
Such pearls of wisdom.......2003-01-09
I am not qualified to write a review of this book, but neither is the above author as his "review" is nothing more than an uninformed assault on modern finance.
In fact, I submit, that said reviewer knows nothing of finance whatsoever.
(Since this book happens to be well regarded, I'll give it a five)
A theoretical substitute for supply and demand.......2002-12-20
A complicated body of mathematical theory, developed over a period of about 30 years, addresses the question: how should derivative X be valued if we know certain parameters, especially the volatility of the price of its underlying asset?
But why exactly does the question need answering? After all, the price of X, like that of its underlying, is determined by the point at which the demand for X is equal to the supply of X. One doesn't need a computer for that, one just needs a liquid marketplace. I can look up the price of a share of Microsoft's equity in my daily newspaper. I'm not tempted to develop a body of theory to figure it out, when I can flip through a few pages and find it.
Nowadays, I can also look up the price of a standardized option to buy Microsoft in the newspaper. In 1973, when people like Fischer Black began developing this body of theory, that was not yet the case.
This brings us to the point of my little sermon. The purpose of this body of theory is to produce a price figure in cases where there is not a liquid market for X. The theories answer the question a portfolio manager must often ask himself: if I were able to find a buyer for X, how much could I charge for it?
This book has its moments, but in general I believe this body of theory accomplishes less than its adepts believe. The imagery of a God-like Newton on the dust jacket indicates, I submit, some of the pretentiousness that gets into their ivory towers.

Customer Reviews:
Very basic, basic stuff.......2002-06-11
I bought this book as a part of my graduate coursework in telecommunications field. I was truly disappointed with the book and suprised that it is even required for graduate school curriculum. The author in many cases is contradicting herself from one chapter to another. There are a couple of typing errors in the book too. The writing is poor. The information Ms. Laino is sharing with the public is nothing new for the people who have been in the industry for a while. I would recommend it only for the individuals who know absolutely nothing about telecommunications and need vary basic guidelines on how to manage Telecommunications systems and resources.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent compilation of philosophical/economic thought.......2007-09-27
An excellent alternative to the nonsense offered by liberals and conservatives (and moderates, and socialists, and greens, and reds, and libertarians for that matter). Among the highlights are Harry Binswanger's excellent "'Buy American' is Un-American," along with articles addressing such perennially-hot issues as immigration, socialized medicine, etc. Great book. Don't miss it!
A Book That Is An Accolade to Efficacious Businessmen.......2003-08-02
A productive modern businessman at his most efficacious should consciously hold as much pride for organizing his sphere of business as for the profits he earns as a result of that organization. Should he ever observe an intellectual's insistence that unregulated business development is the cause for economic ills--e.g., the unfairness of using private information about the market to make profits, when competitors cannot thus prosper since they lack this information. . .or the intellectual's insistence that foreign competition is bad for the American economy . . .or the insistence that any motive for the businessman's activity other than his delight in production and in the self-serving use of his wealth, Why Businessmen Need Philosophy will both inspire the listener and galvanize him to follow the right political and economic direction.
The book is also valuable to an honest, reality focused intellectual (even if he has grasped the essential truths of Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal, which contains Rand's articles about basic economic issues). Why Businessmen Need Philosophy offers the truth about some technical, "abstruse" business methods, using historic examples to make them clear. (Several such methods are not covered in CUI.)
The style of the book's authors is simple and straightforward, which makes their articles accessible to every literate reader.
Why Businessmen Need Philosophy is an excellent companion work to CUI, because it applies economic principles in the latter to some highly specialized areas of the business world. If you read one article in this collection, read any of "Why Businessmen Need Philosophy" by Leonard Peikoff, "Wall Street Under Siege" by Richard Salsman, "'Buy American' is Un-American" by Harry Binswanger, "The Philosophical Origins of Antitrust" by John Ridpath, and "Antitrust 'Returns' With a Vengeance" by Richard Salsman--a suggestion based on the standards of lucidity, excellent grammar, and emotional impact.
Businessmen Need Philosophy but Don't Know It.......2003-05-02
Business people find themselves under continual assault from government regulations, threats of lawsuits and under-appreciation of their positive role. The media, activists, politicians and even many religious officials cling to the cliché of business people as greedy, selfish or operating at the expense of others. The positive virtues of business people-self-sufficiency, responsibility and investment in the future--often are ignored by those who see business people as exploiters, cash cows for the government, or guinea pigs for government social policies.
Those suffering under the weight of such attacks will find encouragement and articulate arguments on their behalf in Why Businessmen Need Philosophy, a book-collection of essays that champions the free market and individual rights. Published by the Ayn Rand Institute, a free market and individualism advocacy group, the book lays a solid foundation of reasoned argument of how business people in a free economy exemplify the positive principles on which this country was founded.
"Some critics point to the homeless and blame their poverty on greedy private businessmen who exploit the public. Others, such as [economist] John Kenneth Galbraith, say that American are too affluent and too materialistic, and blame greedy private businessmen...," says philosopher and commentator Leonard Peikoff, who forcefully argues against this negative attitude. "Who are the most denounced and vilified men in the country? You are-you, the businessmen."
The book is an exuberant, enthusiastic reaffirmation of the business person as providing the moral and economic foundation to the country. It provides a spirited defense of small and large business, argues the necessity of a foundation of honesty and fair dealing as growing from a free market economy and states the philosophical basis of why no one has a right to take the earnings of another.
The book argues against the welfare state that relies on the false premise that the desire for another's property creates a right to take it. "The (American) system guarantees you the chance to work for what you want-not to be given it without effort by somebody else," Peikoff says. "We are seeing a total abandonment by the intellectuals and the politicians of the moral principles on which the U.S. was founded. The rule now is for politicians to ignore and violate men's actual rights, while arguing about a whole list of rights never dreamed of in this country's founding documents-rights...."
For those weary of overflowing government regulations and laws dictating their professional lives and businesses, and for those working people who need reaffirmation of their vital role in society, this book serves them well.
Awesome reality check.......2002-02-19
This book does a terrific job at showing how one's philosophy will impact one's success (or failure) in business. It also reminds readers that the long term cannot be ignored, or one will fail in the long term.
Its not by Ayn Rand!.......2001-08-18
The front cover says "by Ayn Rand" but look at inside -- most of the essays are not by her. I think she called this secondhandedness.

Chill winds frequently blow through the financial press. If it's not the Y2K thing, it's the simple fact that stocks have been growing so fast for so long that there just has to be a disaster on the horizon. But you'll find no gloom and doom in Getting Rich with Growth Stocks. Kirk Kazanjian retained five top investors to share their secrets and their outlook on the future, and the result is a book that's refreshing to read and easy to absorb. It doesn't mean that there isn't a hurricane brewing somewhere offshore; it just means that after the hurricane has passed through, the warm breezes will return.
The five investors--Donald Yacktman, Robert Stovall, Shelby Davis, Roy Papp, and Elizabeth Bramwell--share a remarkably consistent view of the future: If an investor consistently picks stocks that meet certain criteria (global sales, a high probability of continued growth, low price/earnings ratio relative to the rest of the market), he or she will get very rich.
Likewise, they share a disdain for international stocks (it's cheaper to buy American stocks that do business overseas), trend-of-the-moment plays (what goes up like a skyrocket can and usually does fall like a rock), and market timing (be in the market all the time, they counsel).
Kazanjian organizes their investment advice into a dozen principles, and intersperses profiles of each investor with their respective picks for the "10 growth stocks for the 21st century." Those generally include the usual suspects--Microsoft, GE, Intel, Merck--and are hardly the point of the book. By the time you're done reading this, you should be ready to pick your own high-ceiling stocks, sit back, and imagine those ocean breezes. --Lou Schuler

Customer Reviews:
Not worth beans.......2003-05-28
This book is not worth beans. Another group of hucksters trying to make a fast buck.
Complete waste of time.......2001-01-23
Unfortunately the recent bull market has generated an entire group of would-be financial experts. They write useless books on the subject they have hard time grasping. This book is a good example of a book that can actually hurt you as an investor. Mr. Kazanjian obviously has little or no idea about such things as asset allocation and modern portfolio theory. His bright idea is: "Hey, High Tech is hot, put your money into it!". I wonder what exactly Mr. Kazanjian would tell his readers know, when Nasdaq is down, bull market is over and his readers actually lost money. Complete and utter waste of time.
Growing Rich With Growth Stocks.......2000-04-30
Don't buy the book for an entertaining read, unless you just enjoy reading about the personal home life and/or chidhood of famous investors. I found that part irrelevent and very boring.
The book is well worth its price, however, for the top ten growth stock picks by each of the five featured investors. That's really the only information of value in the book, but they probably couldn't sell very many copies of a 5-page book, so you're stuck with the filler.
Common Sense Approach to Investing.......1999-08-22
While this book might not be flashy enough for today's dot.com crowd, which thinks it can make a fortune through rapid day trading, I found it to be excellent reading for those who want to build a solid, long-term stock portfolio. My guess is if you follow the advice in this book, you'll make a ton more money than you will trying to play the day trading game. What's more, I found the investor biographies to be very interesting reading. It was a nice break from other investment books which seem to overlooad readers with a bunch of numbers and jargon. I especially recommend this book to readers who are rather new to investing. It is a fun read that's easy to understand.
Too much idle chatter and not enough advice.......1999-08-05
Over fifty percent of this book is filler, most of it biographies of fund managers and descriptions of their home lives. Most of the advice is pretty generic, none of which gave me any better insight on how to pick growth stocks.

Book Description
Bridging the gap between social and industrial/organizational psychology, Interpersonal Insight offers a practical, engaging introduction to the social cognition processes that lead to "insights" into ourselves and other people, shaping our perceptions and behavior across a variety of interpersonal situations--from one-on-one interactions to group negotiations. Combining important research results and over 12 years' experience in human resources and training, Manuel London describes how processes common to interpersonal situations in organizations can be harnessed to help link, integrate, and create more effective human resource programs. In so doing, he details how social information processing affects a person's self-image, behavior, and quality of interpersonal relationships. London proposes a four-step model of insight formation in which a person 1) receives information about oneself and others (called "reflected feedback"); 2) integrates and reconciles the information with other information ("categorization"); 3) interprets the information ("attribution"); and 4) incorporates the outcome into perceptions of oneself and others ("cognitive re-evaluation of self-concept"). "Insight" occurs when an attribution turns into a re-evaluation of oneself or others. London goes on to offer practical suggestions on how human resource programs can be designed to enhance self- or personal insights and suggests ways to elicit and track employees' reactions to major organizational and career changes while facilitating team development. Packed with case studies and references to the literature, Interpersonal Insight is an important book not only for researchers and professionals in industrial/organizational psychology, but for managers interested in enhancing employee satisfaction and production.

Okay... but not great.......2003-02-18
This book is very straight forward, but one thing it lacks is examples. Being that I myself am a visual learner, it would help in learning the accounting process if there were more examples to go on and practice. I'm not totally satisfied with this book. Do I recommend this book? Sure, if you're a CPA and understand the text.
Retired Prof. of Accounting.......2002-03-02
I taught accounting for 12 years at leading hospitality college in the United States. During that time I used and reviewed many hospitality accounting texts. Once I discovered Unserstanding Hospitality Accounting I by Raymond Cote, my problems were solved and I continued to use it because it sets the standard as the authoritative source of up-to-date hospitality accounting methods and terminology.
Straight forward & comprehensive text for accounting sucess!.......2001-09-03
Several years ago, I used Professor Cote's Understanding Hospitality Accounting I text in college. Today, I am a director of food and beverage operations for a large casino corporation in Las Vegas, NV. His text is by far the easiest to understand yet he does a comprehensive job in presenting hospitality accounting. He is the best author that I have read who can take the most complex topic and state it in user-friendly, understandable terms. Understanding Hospitality Accounting I is state-of-the-art and is the only text to provide meaningful computerized general ledger accounting in a real-world environment.
I continue to purchase his revised editions because I use them in my day-to-day management duties and find it to be an essential part of providing meaningful descriptions concerning business organizations, financial statements, accounting records, and the statement of cash flows.
This is a five star book and I highly recommend it for students, teachers, and professionals.
Understanding Hospitality Accounting I.......2000-05-18
This book is the first in a series composed of 2 volumes: Understanding Hospitality Accounting I and Understanding Hospitality Accounting II. This text, published by Educational Institute of the American Hotel & Motel Association, is good for people were the users of accounting information and were not bookkeepers or accountants in the hospitality industry. It presents the accounting concepts and procedures which lay the foundation for understanding the processing of hospitality financial data and its flow in the accounting cycle for the untimate production of financial statements in easy way. There are also problems, review questions, and review quizzes to help readers understand and apply the concepts presented in each chapter. One of the most helpful parts for me is the Supplementary Material: Sample Chart of Accounts.

From the supplier: Concern over teenagers showing interest in satanic practices and rituals may be unnecessary. What would be more appropriate is concern over helping teens raise their self esteem and believe they can change their lives for the better.
