A boring book you gotta have!.......2007-02-26
This book may have saved me thousands of dollars. My own lawyer did a closing on a property I bought using a private lender. Everyone involved said the payment would be $1375.95. We went through the closing, recorded all the paper work, it was a done deal, until I looked it up in this book. The real payment was $1353.80. The eight bux I paid for this book is a lot cheaper than an extra $22.15 per month for the next 30 years!!!!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I mean, who doesn't like to look at mortgage amortization tables? Me and my family like to sit around and quiz each other by saying stuff like "What is the monthly payment on a 30 year fixed interest mortgage of $135,000 at 8.25%?" We've even set it up in "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" format with lifelines and what have you and we have a real blast!
When we want to take a break, we just pull out the book on the calculation of Pi to 150,000 places and see who can recite the farthest. Then we have a group hug!

You may not use it often, but this book will come in very handy when planning to borrow money. I've been an investment professional since 1988, and this is the most borrowed book on my shelf. I also owned the previous edition, and this version has been improved with the inclusion of rates down to 2% and the expansion of loan amounts to $300,000 in the primary table.
The book is conveniently organized in four tables, ordered from most-commonly to least-commonly used (as it happens, largest to smallest). Table 1 (monthly amortization) is where everyone spends the most time. Just turn to the interest rate page, then read across for "loan amount" and down for "years in term," and you've got your monthly payment to the penny. For non-round numbered loan amounts, you can avoid having to interpolate by grabbing a calculator and turning to Table 2 (required payments for monthly, quarterly, etc.), where you can look up the multiplier (per $1000) corresponding to the rate and term of a given loan (yep, that's how your mortgage lender does the math). Less frequently used are loan progress charts and proration data, Tables 3 and 4, respectively.
This book is straightforward, convenient, and travels well. My favorite of its kind.

Great Book -- It got me out of a jam.......2000-11-28
Struggling to put together a farwell speech for a fellow employee -- and not making any headway, I got a copy of this book. It helped me out of a jam. I made a darn good farwell speech (if I say so myself) by employing the tricks that the author of this book describes. (I also grabbed a handful of his jokes, all of which proved to be very funny to my audience.)
I recommend this book to anyone who has to make a company presentation of any kind that could use a dose of humor. What makes this book so good is that you can make jokes of your own that fit the occassion -- it isn't just a run of the mill joke book.

Perhaps the best of its genre, "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Boardroom" places the onus of boring corporate meetings on the speakers themselves. No one is too important to consider their audience, and Mr. Iapoce effectively nudges "suits" to loosen their ties and deliver their messages effectively. Its comedic tips are simply that: tips for catching the attention of listeners thus ensuring that one is "heard."
Buy this one and share it at the office!

I've read this book a couple of weeks ago, and I'm really surprised about the good review it's gotten here! It's just not funny and anyone who'd use the pathetic "jokes" listed in it would me a total dork of himself in a real life business situation. Avoid this one and rather buy the excellent "Podium Humor : A Raconteur's Treasury of Witty and Humorous Stories" by James C. Humes!

Few gatherings cry out for humor as loudly as those in which all the attendees are lawyers. Let's face it: they're usually the joke, not the jokers. This book can enliven a discussion on "subordinated debentures." It should be required reading for anyone on the infamous "partner track."

I'm not the greatest speaker in the world to begin with, and I grabbed this book in desperation when I had to deliver some comments at a roast for a colleague who was retiring.
The two evenings I spent with this book were well worth it. I discovered how to give a humorous presentation and my audience liked it!

The author defines 'Authentic Power' as "the power to consistently obtain what we truly desire" (which is in itself a somewhat question begging definition, but strongly reminiscent of what Senge and others call 'personal mastery'). The book falls most closely into the growing field of books concerned with personal development, with a business audience in mind. It provides a useful review of mental models of power and how they shape our reality and a guide to building power and exercising power through self-empowerment.
Though useful, it does not in my opinion replace Hillman: Kinds of Power: Guides to its Intelligent Uses. (1995)
fresh ideas.......2003-05-07
When I first read this book in the Soring of 2002, I likened it to opening a window and filling my lungs with fresh air. I saw patterns, limits, stumbling blocks I had known and experienced as old style power and could detach from those power sources, even if they came from others.
New possibilities, strengths and creative solutions followed with a new found intentionality for choices made. In 2003 I am convinced the book is invaluable for leadership in volunteerism, and work, and for personal life changes. Now I am pulling the book's ideas forward again to help do some difficult staff training and development.
This is not a long book, but an important read for new perspectives.

Ross has done a masterful job in bringing together concepts that affect all areas of our lives. You can apply the ideas contained in these pages to improve your home life, work or occupation, social and above all your spiritual growth. Manipulation and control currently breed resentment in those it is being perpetrated upon. Most people don't realize they are doing it. To analyze your own behavior and stop the manipulation will not only improve your own quality of life, but it will also affect those around and close to you. I highly recommend this book!

Shockingly Refreshing.......2003-12-16
When I first looked at this book I thought, "mmm...all my problems addressed in one short 124 page book...impossible" but I am happy to Mr. Uche really gets the job done in this book. Its sharp and inquisitive and does not waste anytime, it gets straight to the point. I just finished reading the book and plan to employ alot of the tactics addressed. I you need help taking tests and interviewing, I think you can learn alot from this book.

The Term Frugal Has Many Meanings.......2003-11-23
The term "frugal" has many meanings, each of which conjures different perspectives. For example, for some of us, if you are "thrifty", it automatically follows you are cheap. The nickname "el cheapo" is very often used to describe someone who looks for bargains.
However, is this necessarily valid, particularly when you consider that some individuals practicing similar techniques are often called good money managers?
After you read Shel Horowitz's book THE PENNY-PINCHING HEDONIST: HOW TO LIVE LIKE ROYALTY WITH A PEASANT'S POCKETBOOK, you are definitely convinced that in order to enjoy life it is not how much a person earns that is important, it is how they manage and spend their earnings. Furthermore, once you get over the "what will people think" syndrome you are on your way to applying many of Horowitz's suggestions as to how to have fun and live well without going into hock.
Horowitz provides his readers with a humongous amount of cost saving tips related to a variety of subjects such as: entertainment, food, children, travel, shopping, gifts, and dating. In all likelihood, if you take his advice on any one of his suggestions, you would immediately recoup the cost of the book.
I even found humorous his advice on how to eat wisely at a salad bar and buffet in order to get the most bang for your buck.
We are told: "we should first scout out the whole bar and go for the heavy, expensive goodies at the back. Make a wall with these along the outside of your plate, and then fill the center with squishy items. Now you can pile the veggies and dressing on top, leaving you with a salad to eat first and a substantial potluck main course underneath." You have to admit Horowitz's approach is ingenious!
Another area where we tend to believe that spending more will ultimately result in greater satisfaction is entertainment. However, here again we are apprised of the many cost saving techniques that will permit us to enjoy entertainment that are well within our means. You will be surprised that many educational institutions, libraries, community theatres and local music groups located within a few miles from your home provide lectures, concerts, theatre, and other kinds of entertainment throughout the year. In most instances the cost for admission is minimal and many a time free. All you have to do is call the institution and ask them to put you on their mailing list.
Although the book was published in 1995, most of the advice and principles are still timely. I am looking forward to an updated version of the book that will include web site references

I grew up in a frugal household, and still try to live that way. While I often refer to websites for ideas, it's nice to have ideas in all major categories (food, entertainment, kids, travel, shopping, work) in one convenient book.

So often we think that living frugally means deprivation or going without the fun extras of life. Shel Horowitz dispels that notion right from the start in this fun and helpful book.
Horowitz says, "I am not wealthy, but I am very happy. I enjoy lots of concerts and plays, have a great deal of fun and creative time with my family, travel frequently, own a home in a downtown location with a view of the woods--which is filled with books, music, fine food, original art, and other pleasures. I even love my job! My family's income is lower than that of most of our friends and acquaintance---but our quality of life seems to be a whole lot better than theirs!"
The book is jam-packed with inexpensive (and often free!) suggestions for fun in every area of life: food, hobbies, entertainment, travel, children, gifts, and more. If you'd like to add some fun to your life without adding the burden of high expenses, The Penny-Pinching Hedonist is a great resource.

I had to read this book for a Business course. Larsson meanders through the chapters, dropping and picking up points like a stream-of-concience dictation. While his Pro-globalization points are good, he disregards the arguments against globalization as if they are irrelevant. The point of the book could be made in about half the pages, especially if Larsson would leave politial bashing out.
If you want to explore the issues of globalization to make your own decision on whether you agree with it or not, choose something else, or supplement this book heavily. It's a little boring, but may be useful once you have the background on globalization.
If you have a background in business, don't waste your time with this book. The arguments are based almost soley on Macro and Microeconomics 101 priciples.
If you are looking for fuel to support your Free-Trade fire, this book will provide you with many supportive case studies. You have my blessing to read this book.

Then rememember who funds cato. Maybe if they'd just come out of the closet that their ideology and analysis is slanted by contributors it wouldn't be side. Check their contribution page, too. No cheapo's are allowed.
The old truism rears it's ugly head: "He who calls the piper calls the tune." especially when it comes to politcal economy.
The world was more global prior to WWI than it is now. All industries have flourished and been rescued as a result of keynesian policies and government intervention. All the buzzwords flying around mean that labor and wages will be further destabilized and thrust downward, all in the name of returns on bonds and stock knockers, the part of the economy that receives the most welfare and protectionism. A stable, productive, and well-paid working class make for a strong economy. This one proposes slight variants on the current pyramid scheming. Should be called something along the lines of "health and happiness through starvation."
From 73 to 97 productivity went up some 37% while wages fell 14%. Fool's progress. This is the trend that people who thrive on this would like to see continue. If this is you then you'll like this book.
Good, but too much Asian-focused.......2002-09-02
The book is a good read, however, there is too much focus and evidence on Asian countries. This may be due to the author's obvious familiarity with the region. However, this renders the evidence for his case rather skewed and less colourful. Also, the book gets off the track occasionally and loses its touch with the argument for globalization. Frankly, I am not sure whether I liked the book overall or not as I have a feeling that the arguments could have been put forward in less space. I wish it was written in a more succinct way.
The Race to the Top: The Real Story of Globalization.......2002-08-27
This book certainly attempts to show the merits of free-trade against the alternatives of protectionism, mercantilism or colonialism. However, Larsson's book left many things unsaid. His analysis is too anecdotal, and if I were a anti free-trader (which I am not), then I could by the same token come out and give a multitude of horror stories that are seem to be the result of free trade.
Those of you who wish to buy a comprehensive defense of free trade, this book is not for you. This book is rather a good source of stories and vignettes that would be helpful in a bar argument with the big hairy white guy next to you. Instead, I suggest that you pick up Against the Dead Hand by Brink Lindsey; it is much more comprehensive and gives a concise and accurate history of the struggle to "race to the top."
Good, but could be more focused.......2002-02-26
This book definitely has its heart and head in the right
place, as it recounts the benefits of globalization. But it
seems to ramble a little, without ever directly making the
case that free trade, even unilateral free trade, always
helps a country, with the country's general public
benefitting more overall than special interests may be hurt.
Don't get me wrong, I think it's a very good book, but it
could be even better.
