This is a great book if you want to be a quant or are interested in using mathematical methods for finance purposes. There are not many good books in this field and this one is definitely one of the few good ones out there.

However, this book is not for people with little background in math.

The book earns 4 stars for how it combines what has been out there for some time with Matlab functionality. What one would have appreciated though is something about all the new stuff that has evolved in the last few years (e.g. credit risk, etc.)

Too much introductive.......2003-04-08

Since there is few books on financial application of Matlab, I would say that Mr. Brandimarte has done a good pretty good job. I liked especially the fact that the book covers many topics (bond pricing, derivatives, optimization), however, even if the title says "an introduction", it is still too much introductive and you don't get a grip on the amazing capabilities of Matlab. This book is suitable for people discovering Matlab and Finance at the same time.

Hard to Read!.......2005-06-13

I just finished reading this book for a graduate business class, and it was one of the most difficult books to read that I have ever read. Despite this, the first few chapters of the book kept my interest, once I got past Owen's writing style. However, the book quickly goes downhill from there, as Owen starts talking about a mystical dragon and continues to talk about "spirit," despite the fact that he never really defines what spirit is. By the time I reached chapter seven, I was at point of confusion and never returned. By that point I'm thinking that the dragon Owen keeps talking about is something he saw on an LSD trip. Another problem with this book is that Owen tries but utterly fails to look at leadership from a philosophical/spiritual perspective. Owen is obsessed with eastern mysticism, and must think there is nothing good about western culture/philosophy/religion. It is more of the "east is good, west is bad" mentality that is so often present in management books today, only ten times worse. Not that there are not some good leadership/spiritual/philosophical ideas from the east, but Owen obsession becomes so apparent that I couldn't hardly read it anymore. Also, Owen loves to restate the obvious in this book and then act like he is a genius for knowing it. For example, Owen continually talks about how change is affecting leadership (Come on, I don't think that needs to be discussed anymore, everybody understands that, that is NOT a unique idea.) Furthermore, this book has more fluff in it than just about any book I have ever read. The organization of this book is awful too.

On the positive side, Owen does have some unique ideas of his own, and is not afraid to say some utterly crazy sounding things. Also, his concept of "Open Space" sounds intriguing, but he is has written an entire book on the subject, so there is no need to read this one just to learn about "Open Space." My overall suggestion is to skip this book; there are too many good leadership/management/business books to read to waste your time with this one.

A Solid Effort!.......2001-06-02

Harrison Owen suggests that there is a gap in leadership, because we are going through chaotic, transforming times, and traditional leaders can no longer be in control and protect us from it. However, instead of looking for leadership in the few or "the One," we should recognize that all individuals have the capacity for leadership and, through self-organizing activity, appropriate leadership will emerge for different tasks. He is especially impressed by the power of the informal organization to achieve results and for true leadership to emerge from the interaction of people in this informal milieu. He identifies leadership with the power of Spirit to inspire others. Five functions of leadership are the focus of the book: evoking Spirit with vision, growing Spirit with collective storytelling, sustaining Spirit with structure, comforting Spirit at the end, and reviving Spirit to move through a period of grief at endings and move on.

The book is written as an essay or narrative, with observations, examples, and opinions about what could or should be. While Owen's book reflects a trend in business to provide more meaning and purpose through spiritual underpinnings, some may find his discussion of "Spirit" somewhat fuzzy and hard to grasp. The language of the book is occasionally rambling and his claims don't always seem totally convincing.

The Spirit of Leadership.......2000-05-28

Harrison Owen describes leadership as a capacity within each of us. He builds on his concepts of "Open Space Technology" by focusing on leadership as helping people see possibilities on a large scale rather than focussing on the minute. Storytelling plays a significant role with Harrison on leadership. One must remain true to the spirit of founders yet translate that to current situations. His thoery blends nicely with concepts put forth by Ronald Heifetz and Marsha Sinetar.

Suggestions are made to make someone preparing a resume think about who they really are and how good they are. Suggestions are given to make the Objective a headline and how to write the work experience to support that headline.

"Before" and "After" versions of resumes are shown with critiques of the "before" versions given to show ways to make the resume stronger. Then, the "after" version is a re-write to show the changes so the "after" versions will talk for you. Ten different types of resumes are shown so the reader can use resumes that fit their particular circumstances.

Unemployed workers who have taken Mr. Hart's classes have found good results from the information in this book, as indicated by this statement from one of his students: "I went over a year with no interviews after attending a professional resume class. My thanks to Dick Hart for getting rid of my obituary and getting me to write an advertisement of my skills and abilities with results on one page with a technical addendum. The contents are not long and are written as simply as possible because shorter is better. The book is easy to read and the suggestions are straightforward. Using the suggestions in the book will make you think about what you need to do to put some life in your statements so they will talk for you.

The Chief Administrative Officer and Human Resources Director of an engineering company in Raleigh, NC reviewed the contents in the book and provided her view: "Finally, an easy-to-use, real-world approach to resume writing! Dick Hart's recommendations are right on target. Resumes written according to his guidelines will surely grab the attention and recognition of hiring managers and HR professionals. Everybody ought to have one hard copy.......2005-02-12

"The" book for aspiring writers, everyone should have at least one copy. After that, the online service is maybe all you'll need. With a universe full of places to publish and agents to get you pubished and great articles by people like Jenna Glatzer, I've yet to see every page of my hard copy. I do, however, make constant use of the online service available with the purchase of the book. Online data mining makes for much quicker finding of what you need, as well as record-keeping of what you've sent where.

Don't Waste Your Money.......2003-11-15

There is almost nothing new over 2002 and 2003, and there is nothing in the cd that you cannot get more cheaply on line. They have a connection with Writersmarket.com (a sloppily run outfit--don't give them a credit card). The book is better in the non on line version (That's a 4 star).

Simply a 'must' for any aspiring writer.......2003-10-19

The yearly updates of the "Writer's Market" have become the would-be and professional writer's Bible, packed with the latest information on publications seeking work and paying for writings. This edition includes free access to writersmarket.com, a searchable database of all listings, in addition to its usual emphasis on submissions guidelines, contact names and payment info. The inclusion of Canadian and many international publishers makes for an important guide which is simply a 'must' for any aspiring writer.

I wasn't sure, but I tried the site anyway.......2003-09-11

After reading a Writer's Market review that said the site has more info than the book, I decided to try out the site. And even after only a few days of being on it, I've got to say--it rocks!

There is a lot more information. There are tons of market listings, which is the main reason I buy the book, but there's also a section filled with answers to reader questions about book publishing answered directly by literary agents. And there's a huge archive of articles on marketing your writing.

On top of that good stuff, there are neat features like the Favorites Folder and Submission Tracker--that helps you keep track of your submissions without using 3X5 index cards, or random pieces of paper.

And amazingly, it all costs the same as the book! I mean, I don't think there is a better deal out there, and I'm really confused by the earlier posts that seem to dog this site.

The book has helped me make several sales over the years, but this site should help streamline my marketing efforts so that I can make even more. Or I might use that extra time to get a little sleep.

AS ALWAYS THE 2004 WRITER'S MARKET IS CHOCK FULL OF PLENTY OF MARKETS FOR MY WRITING. I WAS DISAPPOINTED TO LEARN, THOUGH, THAT THE GREETING CARD SECTION HAS BEEN REMOVED FROM THE BOOK AND PLACED ONLINE. THESE MARKETS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A RELIABLE SOURCE OF INCOME FOR ME (AS HAVE MANY OF THE MAGAZINE MARKETS), SO I WENT TO THE BOOK'S WEBSITE AND PURCHASED A MONTHLY SUBSCRIPTION SO THAT I COULD GET THE MARKETS I WANTED. I DID NOT KNOW MUCH ABOUT THE WEBSITE, BUT WHEN I GOT THERE, I FOUND THAT THERE ARE MORE MARKETS THAT ARE NOT EVEN LISTED IN THE BOOK. One aim of this book is to examine the causes of fluctuations in the mark/dollar, pound/dollar, and yen/dollar real exchange rates for the period 1972-1994 with quarterly data to determine appropriate policy recommendations to reduce these movements. A second aim is to investigate whether the three real exchange rates are covariance-stationary or not and to which extent they are covariance-stationary, respectively.
