    Book Description

Whether your business is just a gleam in your eye, a newly launched operation, or a full-fledged firm that's humming right along, you'll never experience real growth without a substantial infusion of cash. Long gone are the days when venture capital groups seemed to pour millions into every "next big thing." Now it's clear that there is real competition for investors, and that only the most viable businesses -- and carefully executed fundraising -- will reap the capital necessary to drive continuous growth.

Raising Capital is the definitive guide for entrepreneurs and growing companies that need to raise capital. The book covers every phase of the growth cycle, and provides tools for building business plans, preparing loan proposals, drafting offering materials, and much more. Now in its second edition, Raising Capital includes a wide variety of updates to reflect the realities of the post-dot-com bust, new trends in private equity markets, and the impact of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, a crucial piece of legislation that establishes new corporate governance requirements in the wake of high-profile accounting scandals.

The book takes you through every stage of the capital process, and provides a bevy of alternatives to evaluate in determining your company's capital strategy. The four parts cover:

    * Getting Ready to Raise Capital: capital-formation strategies, plus recent trends; understanding legal and governance structures and how they affect your ability to raise and use capital; and the role your business plan plays in securing capital

    * Early-Stage Financing: start-up financing; "bootstrapping," or doing less with more at a stage in your business where "cash is king"; private placements versus commercial lending; leasing, factoring, and government programs

    * Growth Financing: strategies for obtaining venture capital; how venture capital transactions work; preparing for and executing an initial public offering (IPO)

    * Alternatives to Traditional Financing: franchising, joint ventures, co-branding, licensing, and other strategic alliances; mergers and acquisitions; plus the Capital Formation Business Growth Resources Directory

Raising Capital provides a huge selection of checklists, charts, sample forms to expedite the capital formation process, and the author relates eye-opening "war stories" and perspectives from the investor's side of the table that will help you avoid pitfalls and guide your business confidently through every growth stage. Featuring comprehensive coverage of all recognized capital strategies, this timely book will help you navigate the murky (and often rough) waters of capital formation.

5 out of 5 stars Commuication and the real World.......2005-10-16

Upon completion and thorough study of this book by Dr. Egolf, I found it to be well written. The book explored all aspects of small group and team communication. It left little room for question, and the book covered the performance part of a group in great detail. The book also, extensively discusses how problems within a group are the focus point. The detail provided behind the focus of problems gives the readers a whole new light on how to approach problem solving in small group setting. The book is also put together in a chronological order with great supporting real life examples. Any reader could relate themselves to this book in a number of ways. The examples provided are not too wordy and they get to the point unlike many other books that talk about problem solving.
Another great chapter in the book is the nonverbal chapter. I thought the chapter was very informative and interesting. It leaves you wanting to know more about the nonverbal communication associated with groups though. I felt that this section could have been elaborated on more. It was very interesting to learn about the nonverbal interaction within groups. Bringing the idea of nonverbal communication to someone's attention really has you think about your actions in a public setting. Are we relaying the same message verbally as we are nonverbally? After reading this chapter, I now find myself playing close attention to my nonverbal action especially when I am trying to be persuasive.
If any manager or team leader needed to find an insight on managing their groups and teams most effectively this book could be your answer. It presents so many different theories from scholars of communications and relates these theories to a realistic scenario. If a group is struggling with identification or problem solving there are so many solutions within the pages of the book that you are bound to stumble upon some kind of answer to help achieve "equilibrium" as many of the theories strive to achieve.
In addition, I found the book to read very easily. Before you know it you find yourself at the end of the book. If you are going to a career where you know you will be working with team members, like sales, this book is sure page-turner. You will find so many tools to help yourself get ahead of the game and not fall into any traps. I would highly recommend this book to any person who is dedicated to bettering their communication skills in the world. Even if your career path doesn't involve teamwork or small group interaction, you will be engaged with small groups all of your life. It would be advantageous to further your skills in communication as you will learn as your read this book.

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent Communicator!.......2003-12-07

I met Dr. Egolf at a professional conference in Miami and heard him talk about his book. I ordered a copy shortly thereafter through amazon.com and am glad I did. Although I have taught communication courses containing many of the concepts he has in this book, I have never read any author who makes them any more interesting. I highly recommend this book. The information is solid and well-researched. He adds a human touch to his writing, showing the relevance of the various theories and concepts.

I primarily teach broadcasting and speech type courses currently. However, if I taught small group communication this is the book I would use as a textbook.

    5 out of 5 stars A Gem of a Book...........2002-06-16

Many of us find ourselves spending hours, days, and even weeks serving on teams and committees. Egolf clearly dissects and illuminates the stages of the group process, so that team players can recognize, anticipate and plan for effective communication. Armed with the knowledge presented in this book, it will be ever so much easier to serve on and lead teams.
Who can benefit? This book will be an unvaluable resource for those in business and the professions; college students assigned to produce group projects; citizens who serve on a jury; and even coaches of sports teams.
Egolf's text is superb--readable, current, theoretically sound, and practical. Whenever three or more people get together to achieve a common goal, the process will be far smoother if they've first digested the content in "Forming Norming Storming Perfoming."

5 out of 5 stars Group & Team Communication for everyone.......2002-04-15

Why do people form groups? What is the best way to solve a problem? What can eye movements tell me about the people I'm trying to communicate with? Pick up a copy of this book if you'd like to know the answers to these questions as well as many others dealing with small group and team communication.

Forming Storming Norming Performing presents the reader with an easy to understand, yet thorough trip through the world of small group communication. Egolf covers all the bases from a scientific standpoint, but doesn't forget that people without a Ph.D. are going to be reading it. Don't get confused, this book is no slouch by any means. Egolf delves deeply into topics from leadership roles to problem solving as well as many other facets of how small groups and teams function. Chapter 14 is especially interesting, as it deals with computer mediated communication. In an age where the Internet has been expanding the world of communication, Egolf shows how the power of technology can and will be beneficial, not to mention best used.

As a student of communication, I can honestly say that this will be one book that won't go back to the bookstore or to an underclassman at the end of the semester. Whether you are a student, professional, or just someone who wants to learn how to successfully communicate in small groups and teams...this should be an essential part of your collection or one to study before your next board meeting.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book to Guide Your Career and Life.......1999-08-22

This book provide a very solid approach to combining the spiritual aspects of life with your career or personal life. Many of us during our lives start to question the value that we are contributing both in our personal and career life and this book helps to bring these issue together. Father Byron uses the excellent approach of the Pauline Criteria consisting of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faith, gentleness and self control all from the scripture outlined by Saint Paul. By utilizing these basic criteria it helps to refocus everyone on what is important in life and once you have that focus you will achieve a balance to live and enjoy your life for eternity.

I would recommend this book especially to Executives who are struggling with where they are in their own life and where they really want to be, which is to align your life in all aspects with a high authority God to help us operate in our daily lives. In addition, it is an excellent step for others to refocus their entire direction in alignment with all aspects of life.

I have used the Pauline Criteria everyday since I started reading the book for daily reflection and I will used it forever in my view. I have already reread the book three times because I am so impressed by its content with real life and the need for spirituality. I am already more peaceful with who and where I am then I was over three weeks ago when I purchased the book. It helps give a new direction in my life. I do have a religous and spiritual belief but this has made it even more solid in my life.

Congratulations on an excellent book. Father Byron thanks for the lesson on eternal life. Attitude is the key as you have outlined so nicely.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book to help anyone get the most out of each day.......1999-05-23

I was surprised that this book was so balanced, being written by a Roman Catholic Priest. It is a broad based, easy to read and very stimulating summary of one sound approach to establishing a spiritual basis for your worklife that will carry you through the trials and tribulations that we all face at some time. There are no miracles claimed here, just hope and a methodology for maintaining it. This common sense approach to daily living focuses on joy and peace, rather than "The Art of War" that has been the most common business philosphy in the past. It shows how each of us can make a difference and bring the workplace a little closer to where we wish it was (secretely in our hearts). A must read for anyone who is a little burnt out or frustrated, as well as anyone just starting out. With William Byron's approach to work, there can be hope and joy even in the most demanding and demeaning jobs!

            1 out of 5 stars A Bad Book.......2001-04-28

If you either just happen to be getting out from doing hard time in the big house or have just been fired again from your last of a string of old jobs for showing up drunk or high, and, despite your progressive public (or private) school education in the era of the "Look-Say" method, can actually read a book, this one just might be for you.

In this slender volume with profuse illustration, the authors give sage advice on how to get a job - any job. In the area of improving your luck with job interviews, for example, they advocate: show up on time, bathe, brush your teeth, comb your hair, put on clean clothes and speak only when you are spoken to. Finally, in an air to boost your confidence, after doing all of the above, be sure to take a lucky charm with you.

I'm sure this book will be a top seller in the state-run mandatory employment counseling market as well as to half-way houses, parole officers, social service agencies and the various twelve-step programs in this country.

Not a bad method (and I just outlined it for you) for landing that plum job sacking groceries on your way to a fresh, clean start in middle-aged life.

On the other hand, if you are sober and have a clean police record, in addition to having the disability today of being able to think independently, you will not find answers in this book.

Despite - or, perhaps, because of - one of the author's previous experience writing job manuals for academics, they subscribe to the popular fallacy that you are not your job - that its something apart from you as a person. Excuse me, but unless you are a prisoner against your will in a forced labor camp shovelling corpses into ovens, what you do in life (as well as what you say) does define your character.

If you are tired of only being allowed to do mediocre quality work at best in your current or previous job, work in a highly state-regulated field, one that does not match your sense of integrity, I recommend a positive alternative to spending the seven dollars on this book:

Should you happen to have that amount left over in your bank account after depositing your unemployment check (minus taxes), filled your car with gas and done your laundry; check-out a romantic-heroic movie to watch such as "The Shawshank Redemption", "The Fountainhead", "High Noon", or "Queen Christina." These films will help you to recharge your emotional batteries and to progress in setting new goals to improve your life.

From the supplier: Some concepts in Gerald Edelman's Theory of Neuronal Group Selection, particularly those pertaining to the cognitive realm, are related to Albert Ellis' theory of psychotherapy and personality, the rational-emotive therapy (RET) theory. Together, the two theories may be used to pinpoint emotional disturbances as the end result of some ideas about the world functioning on a specific neurological level of human consciousness.

                                    Description:
There are two main senses of 'mechanism', both deriving from the metaphor of nature as a machine. One sense refers to contrivance or design, as in 'the plant's mechanism of attracting butterflies'. The other sense refers to cause or law process, as in 'the mechanism of heredity'. In his work on evolution, Charles Darwin showed that organisms are produced by a mechanism (natural selection) in the second sense, although he never used this language. He also discussed contrivance, where he did use the language of mechanism. This discussion relates metaphor in general and Darwin's use of the machine metaphor in particular to the problem of the nature of science, concluding that one use of the metaphor reinforces the objective nature of science and the other use reinforces the subjective nature of science.

                                        Book Description

This book explores the nature of capitalist expansion, providing a wealth of up-to-date empirical data combined with incisive theoretical analyses of the dynamics on international capitalism within a comparative-historical framework. The author uses a class analysis approach to the social, economic, and political problems of Third World countries, as well as those of Europe, North America, and other advanced capitalist states.

                                          Book Description

Until the New Deal, most groups seeking protection from imports were successful in obtaining relief from Congress. In general the cost of paying the tariffs for consumers was less than the cost of mounting collective action to stop the tariffs. In 1934, with the passage of the Reciprocal Trade Agreements Act, all of this changed. The six decades that followed have produced a remarkable liberalization of trade policy in the United States. This occurred despite the fact that domestic politics, according to some of the best developed theories, should have prevented this liberalization.
Michael Gilligan argues that liberalization has succeeded because it has been reciprocal with liberalization in other countries. Our trade barriers have been reduced as an explicit quid pro quo for reduction of trade barriers in other countries. Reciprocity, Gilligan argues, gives exporters the incentive to support free trade policies because it gives them a clear gain from free trade and thus enables the exporters to overcome collective action problems. The lobbying by exporters, balancing the interests of groups seeking protection, changes the preferences of political leaders in favor of more liberalization.
Gilligan tests his theory in a detailed exploration of the history of American trade policy and in a quantitative analysis showing increases in the demand for liberalization as the result of reciprocity in trade legislation from 1890 to the present. This book should appeal to political scientists, economists, and those who want to understand the political underpinnings of American trade policy.
Michael J. Gilligan is Assistant Professor of Politics, New York University.
