Weinstein presents a simple strategy.......2007-08-31
Weinstein presents a simple strategy that I think is worth reading. His strategy involves price action using simple long-term moving average technical analysis with some short term ABC-like patterns (and other technical patterns). His strategy involves buying at favorable risk:reward setups that are subject to manipulation in this market since other participants know how to shake people out of positions and scare them away. However, this strategy can still work with with the additional technique of buying back once the strategy rules are revived. In other words, expect to be shaken out and then buy higher again. If the stock is set to go higher, it will continue the path of least resistance and eventually get in the sweet spot far away from the stop loss point.
The part that was especially notable was learning that the media knows news and emotion, but the price action speaks truth where it counts.
Interesting and well written book. But does it work so well today?.......2007-07-05
I liked this book.
I appreciated the author for his schematic approach, and his desire to keep things clear and understandable.
the first part might annoy you if you still know what the market is.. but it's not so long.
The stage analysis presented here really gives you an important perspective on stocks and market "tone".
Reading the book you will be guided through a way to understand what stocks you should look for, why, and when to pick and discard them.
It doesn't give you "holy grail" tools, but it presents several simple tools working together to make an idea of what stock might be useful to buy long and which to sell short (and when to make it!).
In the final part it shows also some useful tools to evaluate the breadth of the market as whole.
I'm giving only 4 stars because a doubt remained: this stuff seemed to work very well in the 70's and 80's example showed: does it work so well today?
my idea (but I'm still in process to learn profitable trading, and I actually make only paper trading..) is that today could be much difficult to profit only with this strategies.
I think that this approach is invaluable as general guide, but you should use also other tools to have a real edge.
I would also suggest, before you blindly apply these rules, to find in the web some previous releases of recommendations that the authour issued for paying clients and see how they worked.
Techie's Temple.......2007-03-29
For those technically inclined to chartists and trying to figure out what's going on...
Finally found the strategy which makes sense.......2007-03-10
The stage theory really makes the market clearer than ever before. I am sure the strategy described in the book works.
Excellent!.......2007-02-26
Very well written book, though sometimes it gets too verbose. Excellent reading even if you are a fundamentalist.

Book Description
A practical and inspiring guide to transforming your passion into a thriving business--and a fulfilling life.
As people have come to yearn for more fulfilling and creative work, many are realizing their dreams by leaving the corporate life behind and creating businesses around the things they love. In Not Just a Living, Mark Henricks explores the genesis of this cultural and social phenomenon and offers a comprehensive approach for assessing your own potential, for "taking the plunge," and for building a business that helps you fulfill both personal and professional aspirations.
Combining the authority of firsthand experience, colorful and engaging stories from the front lines, and a variety of diagnostic and planning tools, Henricks shows you how to determine whether the entrepreneurial route is right for you, recognize opportunities, overcome obstacles, plan your course, and launch and sustain your business--whether it's a solo venture out of your garage or a multi-million-dollar enterprise.
Customer Reviews:
Not a Bad Effort.......2007-02-15
I really liked the introduction of the concept of a "lifestyle entrepreneur." Too many times, people go into business to get more control, more balance in their lives, and wind up creating environments for themselves that give them far less of each. Making the conscious choice to have a lifestyle is an excellent point of discussion.
Unfortunately I think the book actually seeks to be far too comprehensive in the mechanics of starting and operating a business. In the process, the treatment of these areas is superficial and feels off track.
There is plenty of literature on the mechanics of business, and some commentary on the distinct tack a lifestyle entrepreneur would have to take is definitely needed. The unique aspects required - keeping operating costs low, work to profit ratio high - are good areas to cover, but the book attempts to introduce basic business concepts where only aspects applicable to this lifestyle may be needed.
Overall, the book was a good read - definitely more supportive than science. But, that's okay. I think this book should be supportive, discussion oriented, inspirational, and I felt it should have had more of that. The attempt at being mathematical, business tutorial-ish felt like it really didn't fit. Instead pointing to some basic resources on this - such as the Appendix does - with maybe a chapter on the seriousness of staying on task in business operation (still discussion oriented) may have done the trick. (Because in the end the only way you'll remain supporting your lifestyle is to cover costs and meet personal expenses.)
A discussion (along the lines of Barbara Sher) where it just may be many small things that you do - many services you provide - could enhance the usability for active minds that don't settle on one thing to do.
Nevertheless, the book is worth the read if this is a new concept to you. Funding an enjoyable lifestyle is a very much needed idea in today's world of overdoing-work and burning-out cycles. The author has done our culture a great service in bringing clarity to these ideas.
Misleading title--but a decent effort!.......2004-11-13
First things first, this is *hardly* a "complete guide," the title is very misleading. Rather it is a very general sketch of the main risks & rewards of freelancing it or building your own business.
The scope is very wide and the tone fairly realistic, but (contrary to the title) there is very little of the nitty gritty detail that taking the plunge would actually require.
That said, its a decent read for people toying with the possibility of striking out on their own: It answers a host of intriguing questions like, "Do freelancers\self-employed work more or less hours than their traditional counterparts?" Or, "How do freelancers\self-employed survive periodic\seasonal income patterns?"
It also mentioned some challenges (and benefits) you probably wouldn't think of on your own. For example, it reminded me that the 12% FICA social security tax is normally paid half & half (6% and 6%) by an employer and employee. But if you strike it out on your own, you must cover both sides of the tax yourself.
Lastly, I would add this read is pretty inspiring, filled with success stories from people who made the jump, and these stories in turn give you some *ideas* about how you might carve a business niche out of some activity you enjoy doing. There's definitely some creative brainstorming value here.
This is a good read for a dreamer who wants to ground those dreams with a little reality, and see where that leaves them...
Recommended.
Emotion over facts.......2002-12-13
Mr. Henricks wrote a book with a different perspective on starting a business; Instead of focusing on the manual hard work of starting a business, he focused on the emotional happiness that starting a business can bring. This happiness comes from being your own boss and being able to do more of the things that make you happy. I found the first couple of chapters interesting although Mr. Henricks repeated the same benefits and stories of individuals that made their lives better, which in turn made the book repeat itself.
The last third of the book, Mr. Henricks started to focus on the financial topics. He started to analyze balance sheets and answer questions like "what is revenue?", I then found that this book lost its goal and audience; The goal being emotionally focused on your own business would help you succeed. The audience seemed, at first, to be for individuals who have gone through the initial phases of starting a business and needed a reminder why they started. The financial analysis of a business lost that objective and made this book into a beginner guide to business with a fluff beginning.
Revealing and Instructive Guide.......2002-11-22
"Being a lifestyle entrepreneur is not so much about being in business as it is being you," writes journalist Mark Henricks in this lovely new book. His guide for budding entrepreneurs straddles a fundamental challenge for books for this audience. How do you address the dynamic personal element of this process while answering the myriad and often generic questions that face all entrepreneurs? Henricks recognizes that starting a business engenders two simultaneous learning processes. Individuals must develop literacy with the business process itself, while developing a personal understanding of what you care about, what you're good at, and so forth. And success stems from mastery in both areas.
Henricks, a veteran journalist in this field, addresses this dual learning curve by grounding much of Not Just A Living in his own experience. He writes about the choices he has faced in going solo, becoming a successful owner of his writing in the market. His book does an excellent job of sharing a wealth of instructive information for budding lifestyle entrepreneurs. He tells great stories. He provides spot-on information on everything from using technology to mastering your balance sheet. For folks early in the process of starting up a biz, I recommend it highly.
Living it Up!.......2002-10-27
Seven years ago today (Oct. 27, 1995), a high school friend of mine and I founded Healthy Options, the first natural products store in Manila. I have a marketing degree and had spent 15 years working for other people both in the Philippines and the United Kingdom. Healthy Options was my baby and my first plunge into going on my own.
Seven years later, we have grown into 10 stores with almost 100 full time employees and Healthy Options has become the leader in the natural products industry in the Philippines. As we celebrate our anniversary this month, I find Mark Henricks' book simply priceless and serendipitous. It's a timely reminder for me as to why we put up Healthy Options all those years ago. As a business grows and expands fast, it's very easy to get carried away and start thinking "corporate". At the beginning of this year, I started having mixed feelings and a bit lost as I kept asking myself, seven good healthy years, now what do I do? I'm therefore so thankful to have found the book as it reminded me why I went into business in the first place and it has re-focused my priorities. Thanks Mark. I find the Seven Myths of Small Business Ownership invaluable. And I fully agree that growth, while very important, shouldn't be the ultimate goal of an entrepreneur.
"Not Just A Living" is also a great benchmark for us. We did almost everything Mark Henrick said in the book (eventually) and got many things right (but not always the first time). I particularly feel vindicated about giving franchise (which I strongly feel against) when one of the entreprenuers related her sad experience about the uncontrollable franchisees she had which resulted in her going out of business.
All in all, it's an insightful and enjoyable read. Now I wish Mark Henricks would consider giving lectures about Lifestyle Entrepreneurship to spread the "gospel" even wider.

Easy read and great primer for women.......2004-02-17
This was not my first financial book--and I still enjoyed it! It's the kind of book that you can pick up to read at any point (read one chapter or section) and get a lot out of it. I gave it to my younger sister as a must-read. The title resonated with me because as most women, I love to shop. So it became clear to me that I had to re-think my splurges. A year after reading this book I bought my first home!
Bravo! A Book Written to Be Read and Enjoyed About Money.......1999-03-28
What a treat to Find a book that talks in English and Understands how to communicate important issues. I've bought this book for friends, and family as gifts and each and everyone has loved it. Michaels has a flair for speaking in such a personal way that I felt like we were sitting at the kitchen table together.....
Fascinating and intimate look at money & finance!.......1997-11-25
Ms. Michaels superbly combines money management, relationships, and practical advice in this hard to set down financial advisor. (I read it in one sitting). Who would have thought a book on finance could be so interesting! While the author caught me with her witty title, she captivated me with her personal stories. Her fascinating characters walk the reader through real life experiences -- consequences of financial decisions -- the good, the bad & the not so pretty. In the process, the reader accomplishes a self-discovery of the intimate relationship she has with money & spending. After a year of plowing through half a dozen books on finance, (some of us need more help than others), it was most refreshing to find an author who brings together vital information and engaging personal history in such a pleasurable format. I will definitely be on the look-out for more titles from Ms. Michaels.

Excellent Resource for the Beginner.......2006-05-21
This is an excellent resource for someone that is new to ecommerce. The book covers nearly every conceivable topic from writing a business plan to shipping your first order. It also contains contact information for additional resources.
The writing is clear and easy-to-understand which means it won't be difficult to implement.
The cover infers that it is possible to create a profitable internet store in 7 days. While I do not believe it is likely that your store will be profitable in 7 days, I do believe it is possible to establish a site in 7 days.
If you already have an ecommerce site then you will find this book to be too primary. However, if you are new to ecommerce then you definitely need this book.
Some of the links are old, but good business advice.......2002-02-20
We have a small retail business in Vermont and I am no computer genius. This book was very helpful as we put together our first ecommerce site. Some of the links are outdated, but the business advice is especially good, and the book is well organized and easy to read. We are actually making money at our internet site!! I never would have thought.
Forget the title, this book is worth reading........2000-09-07
When I first came across this book I was turned of by its unnecessary title - The whole notion of building a "profitable internet store in 7 days" is insane in and of itself. The title aside though the book does cover in great detail different aspects of building a business plan with key examples for small and medium sized businesses. Whilst the early parts of the book may seem basic, coverage of areas such as finance, operations and in particular marketing are well detailed and efficiently summarized. Szydlik's background of working with over two hundred Fortune 500 companies makes this book well worth a read as a refresher or the perfect gift to someone who is looking to start their own business.

Book Description
This is the first in-depth study of the early trial-and-error experiences of contracting between Japanese and western merchants trading in the Japanese Treaty Ports in the 18 year period immediately following the opening of the ports in 1859. Fundamental to the equation were the inevitable east-west cultural and legal ambiguities that impacted on the traders. The learning curve for both westerners and Japanese regarding the nature and application of western contracting law was predictably difficult, tortuous and open to constant misunderstanding. Nevertheless, it was within such a framework that the principal benchmarks for trade with Japan were set down and which, in essence, have lasted to the present day.
