Not for trader types, but for investor types.......2007-03-31
This book is an excellent example of the financial industry specialists getting together and writing a compendium of information about a particular market investment strategy. It covers all the 'concepts' of trading but from the angle of the Financial Advisor's world. In other words, if you have money to invest, and you would like to understand the issues that pertain to investing in the commodities world, this book will help you ascertain what the commodities investment vehicle is all about. It does not advise a person to use a managed account, nor does it advise to trade on your own. However, if you are a typical 'investor' who is looking to build up a 401K or what have you, this book will help you decide if adding some funds to a managed commodities account makes sense, with your spare $XX,000.00. The book does have a few relevant charts for beginner traders that can be of assistance if you are looking to trade commodities on your own. It also includes some good summaries of trading styles, and charting types, but again, it is designed to help educate a investor class person more so than build a trader types knowledge base.
Excellent Book About Trading Futures.......2007-01-05
This is a great publication for those interested in learning about futures. Even if you're not considering actually trading these financial instruments, this book is still useful. Most people are aware of the inherent risks of futures. However, they are completely unaware of the reasons, given their lack of understanding of leverage, which this book does a great job of explaining.
Other characteristics that make this book useful is its thorough review of charts. One cannot trade commodities successfully without being able to find opportunities based on chart reading, and with this book, you can master a variety of technical indicators, from moving averages to stochastics. If you have questions about how the tax code treats profits garnered from futures trading, this book provides a full chapter on the subject.
Overall, this is a worthwhile buy if you have any interest at all in the commodities and monetary futures markets. It's all about having the right knowledge in your grasp, and understanding the concepts presented in this book is a step in the right direction.

PRAISE FOR The Complete Guide to FUTURES TRADING

Financial Engineering News
"This landmark book makes futures trading accessible to mainstream individual investors. As chief executive officer of the largest financial exchange in the world for trading futures and options, I can wholeheartedly recommend this volume for the reader who wants to learn the fundamentals of investing in futures."
From the Foreword by Craig S. Donohue, Chief Executive Officer, Chicago Mercantile Exchange
"The Complete Guide to Futures Trading is the ultimate 'getting started' guide. The book leads you through an informative yet concise course with an A-to-Z explanation of how to trade futures successfully. eSignal has partnered with Lind-Waldock for more than a decade to provide futures traders with reliable, accurate, and actionable data. This is a much-needed and well-written resource for the new futures trader."
Chuck Thompson, President, eSignal
"My hat is off to the authors of this extremely well-written and timely book about futures trading. If the experts are right that the next bull market will be in commodities, this guide will find a large audience among investors interested in diversifying beyond stocks and bonds. This guide does a terrific job of explaining the practical aspects of futures trading and will be of great use to anyone interested in using these instruments to participate in market trends."

The meek may inherit the earth, but they do not write style guides. Supremely self-confident, if sometimes cocky, the editors of Wired have done a grand job of describing their style and offering it as a standard for anyone who's interested. There are chapters on voice, jargon, slang, and usage, all described from a Wired sensibility. Their section called "When in Doubt, Close It Up" may even help end the perennial question of "is it e-mail or email?" The book has an accompanying Web site at http://www.wiredstyle.com.
Customer Reviews:
Indeed a bit pompous, but has still a bigger issue.......2004-05-19
Think of "Wired Style" as the 'Chicago Manual of Style' (well, sort of) as stated by Newsweek back in 1999 when this book first came out, and you probably by now can realize where the fundamental problem of the book is. While it does come accross as a bit pompous at times, indeed, the biggest issue it has is the fact that it hasn't been updated since its first edition, five years ago, an entire lifetime by Internet standards. As a result, several ubiquitous terms that you run into everywhere today are missing: blog, RSS, CSS, XHTML, flat panel, and the list goes on and on. So, as much as they ditch the more conservative AP Stylebook, it is not that much better as a tool for editors/writers working in the "digital age", so I don't see much of a point in buying it at this point any more.
An outstanding e-reference.......2004-03-03
This is one of my all-time favorite style guides. Compact, up-to-date, informational yet fun to read. Wired Style answers questions that apparently never occurred to Strunk and White (or to Chicago Manual of Style). The answers are not as prescriptive as those in some style guides, but are written more like "guides" that reveal the thought processes behind the suggestions.
Not the greatest book, but still indispensible.......2003-01-15
There's no doubt that the Wired Style guide is not the best style guide ever written; that said, with Chicago and AP still shockingly behind on integrating usages of Internet and technology-based words into their guides, this book is absolutely indispensible. AP might give three varients of an online word, but Wired gives a more complete listing of all known varients. Whether you like it or not, if you write about the Internet, or ever have to explain Web strategy to someone in writing, you need this book. The other sources out there just don't cut it.
And, as a bonus, if you use a word like "usability," and everyone looks at you funny, this book gives you a backup reference to point to, so you don't look like the one inventing words. (This has in fact happened to me, and it made me question who could possibly not have heard of usability in this day and age -- oh well.)
Valuable resource.......2001-07-24
There is often a debate on how to treat a tech word like email. Should we be like AP or the way the digital press speaks? I found this a great compendium of latest logic in the lexicon of technology. Additionally, the editors are self-deprecating enough to suggest that the standard will likely change -- standby.
Great reference manual.......2001-07-06
As an editor of an online publication, I find myself picking up Wired Style again and again. It has great definitions for terms that frequently come up. Want to know what open source is? Or asynchronous transfer mode? There's also cute stuff in there, like who coined the word nerd (Dr. Seuss). I'm not sure I would pick this book up just to read, but if you're in a position where you need to look up terms quickly, this is the best out there in the high-tech arena.

A wonderful look at all the Tearooms through out Texas.
Customer Reviews:
Perfect Gift for Teasippers.......2001-01-24
What a delightful book! A guide for Texas Teasippers or just a pleasant read - the author has a great sense of humor. This book will live in my car from now on.
A TEA LOVER'S DREAM BOOK.......2001-01-14
A MUST FOR TEA LOVERS What a charming, humorous guide to the tearooms in Texas! Lori Torrance has done such a wonderful job, even my husband is ready to search out some of these places!! It's a miracle! ha If you're a tea lover and enjoy gathering yourself in quiet, little out of the way places, you've got to get this book. And it's the perfect gift for tea loving friends.
And, if you love Texas like I do, you would also enjoy checking out Last of the Old Time Texans, Texas Bad Girls: Harlots, Hussies, & Horsethieves, or a Browser's Book to Texas History....
Can't wait to explore the tearooms.......2000-10-22
This book is great! It is a guide to all the tearooms in Texas! It has pictures, menus, famous quotes, histories of the town the tearoom is in, as well as the history of the tearoom! It even has various fillers, like "How to Read Tea Leaves and What the Symbols Mean", "How to Make a Proper British Cup of Tea", etc. This is so worth the money. I know the author and she has spent well over a year, with her mother, traveling to all these tearooms. They took pictures (inside and out) and the pictures look fantastic. It is not a critique, but a handy guide you can take with you. Why settle for fast food, when you can have an ice cold glass (or even cup of hot) Almond tea , choices of homemade sandwiches, soups and outrageous desserts in a quiet victorian decorated room. In one tearoom, you can even hear singing English Countryside birds. Personally, I have always been a coffee drinker, but now, I am even ready to go drink tea!! (cold or hot). Enjoy the book, I sure do..
Book Description
Executive Thinking stands alone as the book that shows how any executive, manager, supervisor, or team leader today can create or communicate his or her vision, then develop the organizational systems and structures needed to gain commitment, establish alignment, and ensure success for themselves, their employees, and their organization.
Customer Reviews:
A Solid Effort!.......2001-03-20
Remember the old Broadway song, "You gotta have a dream, or how you gonna have a dream come true?" This is the executive version. Author Leslie L. Kossoff maintains that executives must have - and must clearly and enthusiastically articulate - a dream of what a company can be in order to get everyone else in the company excited, aligned and active. As an executive (or as a climber of that ladder), you may find this a pretty reasonable introduction to leadership, though it could also sound fairly simplistic. Kossoff offers a few non-specific examples, either citing news stories or alluding to individual executives, but primarily she tells us how she thinks successful executives should behave. Like the content, the book's tone also is a little reminiscent of a show tune -not too challenging and enjoyable to hum - but its attitude is sincere. We at getAbstract recommend this refresher as a philosophical pep talk that reminds executives how their approach to their jobs affects the realization of their dreams.
Begin To Think Like An Executive With Executive Thinking.......2000-06-20
Dream, Vision, Mission: Achieved - Begin to think like an executive with dreams. Organizations exist based on and because of dreams. Dreams of success. Dreams of product or service differentiation. Dreams of creating an enterprise the likes of which have never been known before. In Executive Thinking, the Executive Thinker, rising through the ranks, leads an executive team with ambassadors, working ambassadors and associates, ultimately leaving an executive legacy. A good read.
President and CEO.......2000-05-16
If you've a business that seems to have grown like topsy very likely this little book is for you. Have you been told that communication within your firm is a problem? What does it mean and more important what do you do about it? Call a general meeting only to find that with 200 or more employees things it's different than when there were only 15 or 20. Employees no longer know you, worse they may no longer trust you. Or maybe you decide that a better e-mail system can help. I'd laugh but I've been there. If any of this seems familiar Leslie Kosoff's little book should help. I've just ordered a copy for each of our supervisors. I tired of hidden agendas and office politics, maybe we can finally begin to pull this firm in the same direction.
Insightful Visions for Dynamic Development.......2000-04-11
Kossoff delivers in this book. She not only shows you how to dream, she shows you how to reach and realize the new vision of your organization and your place in it. In clear, graceful and logical writing, she gives you step-by-step guidelines for creative, "out-of-the-box" thinking and the means to harness the ideas that emerge. Using compelling case studies, she reveals how this technique energizes management structure to move ahead, empowering individuals throughout the corporation. The book will have a significant impact in maximizing operations. A MUST READ FOR EXECUTIVES ON EVERY LEVEL.
Finally! A truly worthwhile management book........2000-04-02
Leslie Kossoff shares with us in clear, easy to follow words, the secret of successful executives. It is like being invited inside the heads of our corporate leaders both today and from yesteryear. The principles in this book are tried and true, yet nobody discusses the thinking process of success. There are no management fads or latest buzz words in here - This is the guide of how to turn dreams into reality. Today's business world is changing at light speed. To succeed in these topsy turvy times, now more than ever we have to understand the thinking proces. Ms. Kossoff has done this for us. No other management book comes close. This is THE book for today's and tomorrow's leaders.

Preferred to Robert's.......2007-03-27
If you can convince your orgaization to use this manual instead of Robert's, I say go for it! I find this manual much easier to use and more in line with what people expect to be the procedures for having meetings. The book updates old-fashioned language like, "I move the previous question" with the more understandable "I move to close debate". The book includes model Bylaws (useful for our Homeowner's Association which is in the process of revision), and a section that explains the differences between this book and Robert's, as well as tips for those whose organizations still use Robert's.
The book is much more readable than Robert's and tends to explain the basic principles a little better. There's a handy table inside each cover to help a member attending a meeting or a presider with proposing and handling motions.
Best Parliamentary Authority.......2003-05-10
The Standard Code is a better parliamentary authority then Robert's. It simplifies and modernizes parliamentary authority, making it more accessible to more people. Dump your RONR and get this work.
We don't wear wigs and robes! We're a casual, social club........2001-08-10
If you've always feared having to pull out the ol' Robert's Rules of Order because it was too detailed and complex for the casual social organizations in which you participated, help is here. Someone has realized that, because a group might need parliamentary procedures, it does not need the granularity required by The Parliament of England.
The Standard Code of Parliamentary Procedure is understandable, comprehensive, logical, refined, and efficient. As it should, it covers all the formal business of holding a productive and respectful meeting. But it also includes procedures that facilitate business for the less formal organization or club.
Necessary jargon is defined in a glossary. The "Often-Asked Questions" section covers many common situations and eliminates the need to look through the chapters for most answers. The book is up-to-date, addressing contemporary and often-encountered situations such as holding meetings and elections via the telephone or Internet.
As a bonus, it serves as a resource to those trying to form an organization. There are chapters to help you prepare documents (like bylaws and financial records) that won't be in conflict with legal and parliamentary procedures down the line. It explains the hierarchy of documents that govern an organization. There's even a section that helps explain some of the arcane procedures in Robert's Rules!
I'm grateful to have found this gem. It deals with all the situations that my clubs have encountered.
An alternative to Robert's Rules of Order.......1999-12-22
One of the best modernised book on the parliamentary procedures.
1st published in 1950, this 3rd edition is revised by the American Institute of Parliamentarians in 1988.Since this publication, many organisations have changed their bylaws to designate it as their parliamentary authority, among them are: American Medical Association and the American Dental Association.
It is the second most popular parliamentary authority after Robert's Rules of Order.
WHAT GROUPS MUST FOLLOW PARLIAMENTARY PROCEDURE? 'All organizations, such as business, cultural, religious, social, fraternal, professional, educational, labor, civil, scientific, medical, and governmental, are subject to the principles and rules of common parliamentary law. All profit and non-profit corporations and associations and the boards, counsels, commissions, and committees of government, must observe its rules.' Sturgis, p. 3.
This book is undoubtedly one of the best and comprehensive works. There is also a chapter which intended especially to aid persons unfamiliar with parliamentary procedure.
To quote Dr. Floyd M. Riddick, Parliamentarian Emeritius US Senate: 'It is understandable vocabulary makes it usable by anyone, not just experts in the field. All students of parliamentary procedure should have a copy in their library.'
THE Code of Parliamentary Procedure.......1999-11-28
Contains the complete standard code of parliamentary procedure, with each aspect thoroughly explained. This is the widely accepted procedure for meetings (ie United Nations). Very useful for keeping large meetings organized.

Author's comments.......2003-04-27
Instead of the confrontational process of traditional rules of order, I used a negotiation of consensus procedure. My years of service in cooperatives, churches, service clubs, and other membership organizations showed me how people of good will can make democratic decisions together. I set forth the exact procedures to use to avoid hostilities and to apply the most brain power to any problem a group may face. I also describe in detail the responsibilities of the officers of membership organizations. I tell how to organize a new co-op or other organization and include guidelines for writing -- or re-writing -- your articles of incorporation and bylaws. I show how you can consider every possible solution to a problem, instead of limiting your discussion to the one idea in a main motion. This is a practical guide, not a technical manual.

Refund please.......2005-03-24
As I dove into the book, I was waiting for the actionable jewels of wisdom from this author of deep experience. Through the first few pages it sounds like an infomercial for itself giving you the impression that the meat is just around the corner. Forty or fifty pages later I realized there was no meat.
The outline asks some great questions and leads you to believe that the book answers them. After flipping anxiously to the page to find the answer, you are left feeling empty and cheated.
Not only would I like my money back, I'd like the author to compensate me for my time he wasted. Maybe the hidden value of this book is the lesson I learned about not being suckered in by a single rave review probably written by someone known to the author.
King Triumphs with Victory System.......2001-04-25
My friend's father, who is the CEO of a very large company in West Virginia recommended this book to me, and let me borrow his copy. I have a lot of respect for my friend's father and how he is a self-made man who has become so successful and accomplished exactly what he wanted in life. So, I figured that he wouldn't steer me wrong. At first, I was not impressed with the book-- just by its appearance, but once I started reading it, I was surprised, and a little disappointed in myself that I let looks be so deceptive. The cover is really simple and straightforward, and I guess I'm used to reading a lot of self-help books with glitzy covers that catch your eye in the bookstore. But inside, I found so much that I've been able to grab onto. I really like the way the material is presented. It's easy to understand, and laid out well. I've got kind of a short attention span, so it's hard for me to read for long periods, but I was able to stick with this book because it was so much like the author, Randy King was just talking to you. Since I read THE VICTORY SYSTEM, I've actually put into practice, I'd say, about 60% of what is recommended, and I think I'm well on my way to a good career in the records management industry. I'm not sure why this book was so effective for me, because I've read plenty of others in the same category. It seems like there's just a lot of practical wisdom, and I figure that's why a guy like a CEO would even look at it to begin with. As a gift, I just bought him another book by King, GROW YOURSELF, GROW YOUR COMPANY, which I haven't read yet. But this time I can afford to buy the book rather than borrow it.
