Book Description

The classic bestseller by Benjamin Graham, perhaps the greatest investment advisor of the Twentieth Century, The Intelligent Investor has taught and inspired hundreds of thousands of people worldwide. Since its original publication in 1949, Benjamin Graham's book has remained the most respected guide to investing, due to his timeless philosophy of "value investing," which helps protect investors against areas of (possible) substantial error and teaches them to develop long-term strategies which they will be comfortable with down the road.

Among this audio's special features are the use of numerous comparisons of pairs of common stocks to bring out their elements of strength and weakness and the construction of investment portfolios designed to meet specific requirements of quality and price attractiveness.

I am an eager reader of books on Warren Buffett's investing methods. I really want to like "The Intelligent Investor", but I don't. Unfortunately, Benjamin Graham did not write his books to be timeless. Instead, he wrote them specifically for the investing environments as they existed at the times of publication. This audiobook is of the 1972 edition of "The Intelligent Investor", and it reflects the investing environment of the early 1970's.

The story of Mr. Market and the principle of "a margin of safety" are important concepts contained in this book, but they can be found in other writings by and about Warren Buffett.

There is an updated edition of "The Intelligent Investor" by Jason Zweig. It was published in 2003. Hopefully that is better than the older, outdated editions. It is not (yet) available in audio format.

If you are looking for a good audiobook on Warren Buffett's investing methods, I highly recommend "How to Pick Stocks Like Warren Buffett" by Timothy Vick. The best book on Buffett's investing methods that I have read is "The New Buffettology" by Mary Buffett, but it is not available as an audiobook.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for beginners.......2007-01-11

This book is specifically for invertors not speculators. Haveing this on CD and a book format, its easier to grab the ideas that were written couple of decades and still its worth.

4 out of 5 stars Intelligent Investor CD.......2006-08-30

Have the book and the CD. They work well together. The CD is great just after reading the book to hammer some of the big picture concepts. The CD is wonderful rush hour material to get you out of that rush hour driving sooner! It is worth the $$ to have both.

Book Description

Most of us go through life grappling with day-to-day, seemingly unrelated problems. What we fail to realize is that almost all of these problems can be traced back to ineffective communication. The Clarity Factor suggests that we refocus all the energy we put into solving everyday problems on changing the methods of communication that create the difficulties in the first place.

This charming, easy-to-read parable follows Gloria Donovan, a frustrated working mom, as she meets a stranger who teaches her four simple guidelines for improving her communication skills. As she implements these steps into her daily life, Gloria is surprised to find that people begin to not only listen to her, but understand her, and many of her troubles are resolved. Through her example, this story illustrates how anyone can improve relationships and eliminate hardships in both the personal and professional spheres through effective communication.

5 out of 5 stars Clear, concise, complete, correct and concrete........2002-05-17

"The Clarity Factor" is a perfect example of how a few well-chosen words and well-written sentences can get the most complicated message across to the most number of people in the least amount of time. Ray DiZazzo's writing is simple and straight to the point, yet charming enough to win a smile or two.

The story is a parable refreshingly set in the here and now. Its central character is Gloria, an executive, wife and mother, whose relationships with an employee, her husband and her son are becoming more and more chaotic and strained. Enter Joel, who meets Gloria in her dreams and shares four basic Focal Points of communication with her. Over the next few weeks, in her waking life and her dream life, Gloria uses these Focal Points and does not just get her message across, but transforms her relationships.

I particularly like Joel's Clarity Monitoring System and its holographic Sender and Receiver plates. It showed me, rather than told me, how Senders and Receivers can be on such different wavelengths that a message doesn't get through alive. Showing is always better than telling, which is why this book works so well.

DiZazzo could have easily written the one millionth non-fiction book on effective communication . . . and bored us all to death. The short story format really does get his point across much more effectively. The situations in Gloria's life are excellent, even amusing, illustrations for his message. As they represent common problem areas in communication that many people face today (on the job _and_ at home), they speak directly to readers.

This is not the kind of thing I usually read, but I enjoyed it immensely. "The Clarity Factor" is magical, even sentimental, at surprising moments.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Read!.......2001-04-11

Meet Gloria, harried boss, wife and mother. She's an intelligent, competent and well-intentioned person, so she can't figure out why Marty, her terminally put-upon employee resents her, why her husband Bill ignores her, or why conversations with her teenage son Todd always turn into shouting matches. Through a series of enlightening interactions, Gloria shows readers how seemingly hopeless relationships can be resurrected when communications improve. Author Ray DiZazzo uses hypothetical examples to illustrate his tips for clear communications. His narrative won't win any literary awards, but it is surprisingly effective at teaching readers how to communicate better. We [...] recommend his book to all managers, because your job hinges in large part on communicating effectively. Now is that perfectly clear?

5 out of 5 stars Calculate Your Clarity Factor?.......2001-03-08

Ever wonder what it would be like to actually peer into someone's mind and see how they perceive you as you speak to them? If you're a boss, for instance, how is that employee viewing you when you nonchalantly utter, "By the way, I need your report on my desk by Friday morning." Or, as a parent, what do your kids envision when you look down wearing your sternest poker-face and declare, "No staying out till midnight - period." And what about your spouse? What kind of mental images do you conjure up in his or her mind with, "Look, I've had it with these continual arguments!" Impossible to see inside someone else's head, you say? Not for author Ray DiZazzo in his unique new book, THE CLARITY FACTOR. Written in a refreshingly chatty, upbeat style, DiZazzo uses the vivid dreamscape of finance supervisor, Gloria Donovan to let us (and her) glimpse how people view her in a series of important business and personal conversations. For Gloria, this "gift" of sorts is not always easy to deal with, but it certainly is an eye-opener. About what? Verbal clarity - how clearly we speak and listen. What people hear in their own minds as our words are spoken. Often it's not what we think or want, and as this book makes perfectly clear, that can have a profound affect on our lives. According to DiZazzo we each have a "Clarity Factor" - an internal measure of how clearly we're understood and how well we understand those who speak to us. DiZazzo points out that in most cases the average person's Clarity Factor is, shall we say, a bit on the "cloudy" side. In fact, he says most of us are actually walking around in a kind of garbled, verbal daze half the time, but we don't realize it! Why? For three reasons. First, we feel we're too busy to work on basic communication skills. Second, we assume we don't need to. We're brought up with the mistaken perception that talking is like walking - an instinctive reaction. And most important, we don't use DiZazzo four simple "Focal Points" to sharpen our words, clear the static from our cerebral receptors, and polish our Clarity Factors to new levels of conversational prowess. Now you might think that the pay-off for using DiZazzo Focal Points would be just what we'd all expect from a communication book - less stress, more efficiency, stronger relationships, better productivity, reduced frustration, and so on - as if that weren't enough! But something more comes with this highly engaging little tale - an amazing byproduct of verbal clarity we call basic human understanding. In other words, an ability to focus on the sensitivities of those we communicate with - to tune in to their message so precisely, we can hear "between the lines" as they speak. That's right, The Clarity Factor gives us a way to actually connect on a new, more profound level with people and the world around us. You know the one - that fragmented, fast-paced, constantly churning sea of humanity we're all treading water in. And the result? Increased self-confidence, a spiritual sense of personal well-being, and rich, deep relationship harmony. This is a great little book - just over a hundred pages, lots of fun to read, and it winds up with an unexpected, hard-hitting emotional twist. The Clarity Factor drives home how important and simple, yet unfortunately rare true clarity is in both our business and personal lives. The good news is DiZazzo also gives us a simple, entertaining, sure-fire way to solve the problem.... 1 out of 5 stars Here's the 5th secret...........2001-02-06

...this book has been written many times before by much more informative communicators. "The Articulate Executive" and "Emotional Intelligence" come immediately to mind. Where this book succeeds is in the shallow artifice of using dream sequences and parables to outline these 4 incredibly basic points:

1. Focus your message 2. Magnify (get) the listeners attention 3. Penetrate personal barriers 4. Listen with clarity

Whew! Let's all communicate! It's as easy as 1, 2, 3! Next: "How to build an atom bomb in 2 easy steps".

Communication is serious business, and done correctly, really can improve the quality of your life.

I suggest finding a resource that treats the subject matter with more research, guidance and respect.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book for Stallbusting Spoken Communications.......2000-06-27

Our firm's research shows that spoken communication usually leads to more misunderstandings than understandings. Those miscommunications, in turn, stall progress and make life much more difficult for all concerned. The Clarity Factor is an outstanding explanation of how to improve your performance as a speaker and as a listener so that those stalls can be avoided.

As the introduction points out, top executives in major companies have pointed to their skills in communications as a major source of their career success. On the other hand, few people feel that they have or take the time to focus on improving skills in this critical area.

The book is written as a fable about Gloria, a manager in an accounting firm who must deal with a busy life, a recalcitrant subordinate, an uncommunicative husband, and a rebellious son.

The author proposes four key principles, along with some subprinciples for applying them. Each one makes a lot of sense. In fact, I can remember times when I did not get good results when I violated these principles either at work or at home. I found the book to be a good reminder to spend time thinking about what I am going to say before I say it. You are also provided with some simple guidelines and thought processes to give you some direction.

I particularly liked the way the author showed Gloria with poor communications, and then how she could rethink those and turn them into good communications. I think the examples will be helpful to you, too.

The great benefit of this book is that it can help your work and personal lives, as well as cut down your work so you can enjoy life more! This book is a real stallbuster!

Behind each good CEO, head coach, and general, there's a number-two person who is supremely capable and yet either shuns the spotlight or is willing to wait patiently for his or her turn. Heenan and Bennis take a thorough look at the contributions of these number twos, finding brilliance and dogged determination--qualities the financial press traditionally finds only in bosses--but also the humility and loyalty necessary to remain second banana.

Although the authors refer to almost every professional marriage you can think of--from Abbott and Costello to the short-lived duo of Ovitz and Eisner--the heart of the book focuses on 11 genuine successes in the annals of number-twodom.

The chapter on Al Gore contains an interesting dissection of the role of the VP in American politics. A chapter called "Cyberstars" talks about how Intel's Craig Barrett and Microsoft's Steve Ballmer have contributed to the spectacular success of those companies. (Interesting tidbit: Ballmer once beat Bill Gates in a math competition when both were undergraduates at Harvard.) Bill Guthridge, an assistant basketball coach at the University of North Carolina who served under Dean Smith for 30 years before succeeding him, gets his due in a chapter that ably explains what an assistant coach actually does: it's a tough gig.

The point of the book is that all these fascinating lieutenants represent an argument for a newish type of power-sharing management. It's a strong argument, but it seems dependent on brilliant adjutants, and one senses there may not really be enough of those to go around. --Lou Schuler

    Book Description

"Co-leadership...is a tough-minded strategy that will unleash the hidden talent in any enterprise. Above all, co-leadership is inclusive, not exclusive. It celebrates those who do the real work, not just a few charismatic often isolated leaders who are regally compensated for articulating the organization's vision." -David A. Heenan and Warren Bennis

Today's heads of big companies are as recognizable to us as the most popular entertainers or sports stars, but the heart and soul of every organization are those leaders below the CEO. Today's celebrity CEO has become either a figure head or an egomaniac, and often too public a personality to get the real work done. That work is done instead by teams of leaders-exceptional deputies who forge great partnerships to maximize both organizational and personal success.

Heenan and Bennis believe we must look beyond the Bill Gateses of the world to understand what makes an organization excel. Written for CEOs, managers, and anyone else interested in modern organizations, this is the first comprehensive study of co-leaders and their often quiet power. Exhaustively researched and illustrated with memorable anecdotes and lively stories, Co-Leaders examines a dozen great partners such as Steve Ballmer of Microsoft, Bob Lutz of Chrysler, Bill Guthridge, coach of the University of North Carolina basketball team, and Anne Sullivan Macy, Helen Keller's teacher.

The changing nature of corporate leadership has seen the emergence of a new Silicon Valley model of success, where boss and subordinate seem more like peers with the spotlight on great partnerships. Talent, not title, is the source of power at a growing number of hot high-tech companies. In these collegial, non-hierarchical organizations, today's deputy can become tomorrow's CEO simply by taking his or her breakthrough idea and walking out the door. Good ideas belong, initially at least, to the people who have them, not to the company and not to the boss which is why this new egalitarianism isn't just a matter of style-it's a question of survival. Co-leaders know both the executive and subordinate experience, making them better adapted to the needs of the new millennium where men and women who can command and follow will prove to be the greatest assets of any organization.

Co-Leaders is intended for everyone who aspires to make his or her organization great. By showing the enterprise through the eyes of inspired deputies, this book reveals how both organizations and individuals can benefit from a more inclusive, less celebrity-oriented definition of leadership. This groundbreaking book argues for a new paradigm: gifted leaders and their talented co-leaders working together to make their organizations stronger, more nimble, more equitable...and ultimately more successful.

David A. Heenan is a trustee of the Estate of James Campbell, one of the nation's largest landowners with assets valued at over $2 billion. A former senior executive with Citicorp and Jardine Matheson, Heenan has served on the faculties of the Wharton School and the Columbia Graduate School of Business. A Wharton Ph.D., he is the author of The New Corporate Frontier and The Re-United States of America, and his articles have appeared in the Harvard Business Review, The Wall Street Journal, and The New York Times.

Warren Bennis is Distinguished Professor of Business Administration at the University of Southern California and a consultant to multinational companies and governments throughout the world. Often referred to as "the guru of modern management," he is one of the preeminent authorities on leadership. Author of over a dozen books, including the best-sellers Leaders and On Becoming a Leader, Bennis's insights have fundamentally shaped the way we think about leaders today.

5 out of 5 stars Packed With Knowledge!.......2001-08-23

Although the business press likes nothing more than the rise and fall of mighty corporate monarchs, authors David A. Heenan and Warren Bennis (co-leaders themselves, clearly) contend that today's most important management trend is the movement toward collaborative leadership. While it's become common wisdom that the lightening-fast pace of contemporary business demands more flexible command structures than traditional corporate hierarchies can provide, the cult of personality still dominates public perception. Heenan and Bennis present compelling theory as a basis for their co-leadership model, and reinforce their thinking with a string of examples of executive dynamic duos, like Gates/Ballmer, Grove/Barrett and Merrill/Smith. The case histories are not used to blindly buttress the authors' point, however. The bloody Eisner/Ovitz debacle at Disney is presented in gruesome detail, an apt illustration of the danger of ego in a collaborative age. We [...] recommend this book as required reading for any corporate executive.

5 out of 5 stars The Right CEO and COO Pairings Can Accomplish More.......2000-06-28

The title of this book is a little misleading. I assumed that the book was about co-CEOs, something that is usually a disaster waiting to happen. In fact, the book is about partnerships of complementary talents where one person is willing to work hard out of the limelight. Not all of the examples are business examples either. The authors also look at Chairman Mao and Chou En-lai, President Truman and General Marshall, Bernice Pauahi Bishop and her husband, Charles Reed Bishop (founders of the Bishop Estate in Hawaii), Helen Keller and her teacher Anne Sullivan Macy, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, and two pairs of basketball coaches.

The book correctly points out that many leaders don't want (or cannot tolerate) having a powerful second-in-command. A COO is often a position created by the board to assist in a transition to picking a new CEO. If the old CEO can sabotage the COO, the old CEO may get to keep the job longer than planned. So what could be co-leadership often doesn't get off the ground. In fact, the COO job is often a dead-end for the inhabitant.

The advantage of the teams, when they work, is that much more can be accomplished by dividing tasks and by challenging each other's thinking so that better ideas are created and more mistakes avoided. The authors feel that every organization should have co-leaders. Frankly, that's unlikely to happen.

The book nicely summarizes 10 lessons for how co-leaders should operate and another 10 lessons for creating a co-leader environment. Most of these will seem like common sense to you, but they are worth considering.

My own research on CEOs shows that the number of roles they are expected to excel in continues to grow. On the other hand, those who are most successful year in and year out as CEOs usually have no co-leaders. They tend to operate with a top management team that more broadly shares the responsibilities and challenges. It would be interesting to put some quantitative measures on the co-leader concept to see how it performs compared to the alternatives.

The main benefit I got from the book was learning more about people who have toiled out of the limelight before becoming CEOs (and who made important contributions as COOs) like Craig Barrett at Intel and Steve Ballmer at Microsoft.

If you are thinking about having a COO or taking a COO job, this book is a must read!

This is an absolutely great book on online marketing, arguably even better than the many previous Guerilla Marketing books. If you follow the advice in this book, you stand a good chance of becoming one of the leaders of online commerce. I will even admit that while reviewing this book, I realized that there was something very simple that Amazon.com Books could do that we hadn't been doing, and in five minutes, I was able to help leverage an existing feature of our company in an entirely new way that may further strengthen our online identity. And, for a marketing book, there can hardly be any stronger recommendation.

3 out of 5 stars Written in 1995 -- world has changed -- good historical look.......2006-07-30

This is a good historical look at where we've come from. Wasn't meant that at the time in 1995 but it is now. Bulletin Boards -- pretty much dead, electronic billboards and other antiquated words/terms. No Google Ad Words and Google or Ebay info that is up to date-- keep it on your shelf or keep in back of closet to show how the web has changed -- be fun for teacher to compare the web then and now. That's about the only reason I can say to own it now.

                    3 out of 5 stars Ch 12 made sense.......2003-10-29

The first ten chapters represented a firestorm of ideas. Ug, as the book states a 100 ideas to pursue. Let say the value of each idea is debatable. Some ideas will be a waste of time. My advice is to mapout a path of "what you want". Look at what ideas will move you towards your goal.

Finally, in chapter 12, Mr Allens says, "Referrals are the easiest and least expensive way to market your business. Its much simpler and cheaper to develop repeat sales to a group of satisified customers you've developed over the years than to find new customers." I think Mr Allen should have changed his book to a 100 ideas to retent a customer. Amazingly, Mr Allen states, "The best guerrila marketers spend 60 percent of their time and energy selling to existing customers." I'll bet that percent is higher today. Customer expect top notch performance. One is left to wonder why did Mr Allen did not change his first ten chapters focus to "Building Happy Customers using Online tools". There I've given him a great idea.

I found a number of websites links in the book broken or of no value. Disappointly, Mr Allen hit all the buzz words: email, bulletin board, storefront, service, feedback, classified ads, media campaigns, and free advice or articles.

The bottom line building a presence in cyberspace is expensive and positioning is king. The current of media attention getter does not trade with the consumer using pennies, instead hugh promotional campaigns dump billions to compete for the minds of the consumers. So, Mr Allen correctly accesses the situation intelligently in the last portion of his book when he tells the reader to focus on build the business by word of mouth from satisfied customers. Now that makes sense!

                    2 out of 5 stars Outdated.......2003-02-17

Even in 1996 when it was written, it was old story. This book is good for basic marketing courses in high school.

3 out of 5 stars the way of the dinasour.......2002-09-05

THis thing is so out of date it's ridiculous. I mean, there is no way you can actually succeed with this book. And not to say it's a bad book but it's hoplessly behind the times. For something up to date, read Guerrilla PR Wired. It's cutting edge and hip and it's so much more than just a book of tips. It explains everything behind PR and why it works and other stuff like that. And the book tells you how to publicize your stuff without spending like a fortune. Why would anyone want to read anything else?

2 out of 5 stars Sorry to disagree with Paul Allen, but...........2001-07-19

I hate to disagree with someone who obviously had enough business sense to co-found Microsoft, but this book is terribly outdated. The minute it was put to print, it became terribly outdated.

Perhaps when the book was written, in the Mid-90s, it offered help in the new frontier of ecommerce. Now, it will just confuse anybody who doesn't know better.

                    Why?

Simply put, it doesn't speak of many new methods of marketing online. Banner Advertising, Search Engines, Site Design, and Opt In Email are no where to be found in this book. The book definitely has a very outdated feel to it, and I do not see how this book could be useful to anyone interested in online promotion.

                    Book Description

This book describes in detail the negotiation of the 1982 U.S.-E.C. Steel Trade Arrangements, providing all the necessary background information including the first authoritative post-mortem of the Steel Trigger Price Mechanism. Levine shows how the 1982 Arrangements evolved from an interplay of U.S. laws defining and enforcing "fair" trade, economic and industrial developments, U.S. and European domestic politics, international relations, and simple economic self-interest. The author contends that the U.S. steel industry was able to use leverage created by a judicialized system of trade dispute settlement to force the U.S. Government to accept a political system of import protection that it would otherwise have refused.

Mr. Levine has still written the definitive text about the US- EC Steel trade negotiations. As a frequent observer of the Commerce Department during the early 1980s, I know that his keen sense of people and politics served him well in this work. It remains in a prominent place on my own bookshelf. I agree with the review by Sam from Pasadena. If you are interested in US government, Commerce Dept, trade policy, or have a mother, you should buy this book.

I have nothing but positive things to say about the author of this book -- he's my favorite person who has ever worked in the State Department, and this is undoubtedly the best book he's ever written. Also, the dedication is heart-warming.
