Book Description

"..this book...gives us a history lesson and a guide on how to build commercial finance that fits the needs of the world's poorest majority. Policy makers, finance leaders, and anyone who wants to join this revolution in banking must read this book." Around the world, a revolution is occurring in finance for low-income people. The microfinance revolution is delivering financial services to the economically active poor on a large scale through competing, financially self-sufficient institutions. In a few countries this has already happened; in others it is under way. The emerging microfinance industry has profound implications for social and economic development. For the first time in history, capital is well on its way to being democratized. The Microfinance Revolution, in three volumes, is aimed at a diverse readership?economists, bankers, policymakers, donors, and social scientists; microfinance practitioners and specialists in local finance and rural and urban development; and members of the general public interested in development. This first volume, Sustainable Finance for the Poor, focuses on the shift from government- and donor-subsidized credit systems to self-sufficient microfinance institutions providing voluntary savings and credit services. "A magnificent work" Elizabeth Littlefield, CEO, Consultative Group to Assist the Poorest (CGAP) "A much-needed wake-up call for economists" David E. Bloom, Clarence James Gamble Professor of Economics and Demography, Harvard University "A major work that will unquestionably lie at the very center of microfinance literature" Robert Peck Christen, Senior Adviser, CGAP Secretariat; Academic Director, Microfinance Training Program, Naropa University "A seminal work" Ira W. Lieberman, former CEO of CGAP; Senior Manager, World Bank

The report is comprehensive, somewhat technical, but limited to one country. The data used is about 10 years old, which is old in the fast moving micro-finance sector.

    Book Description

This edited book is devoted to an issue of increasing importance in management theory and practice: organizational identity. The concept of organizational identity has received attention in many disciplines such as strategic management, marketing, communication and public relations, and organization theory. As globalization of business and organizations of all kinds becomes the norm rather than the exception, issues of collective identities take on a strategic importance. There has been, however, very little integration among the various disciplines and practices resulting in conflicting definitions, and little cumulative research.
The aim of this title is to further understanding about collective identities phenomena by bringing together contributions from various management disciplines. The editors have developed an integrative framework--the five-facet framework--that allows articulation of contributions from disciplines as diverse as strategic management, organization theory, marketing and communication. Sixteen scholars from Europe and the US have contributed nine chapters that explore various aspects of collective identities using the five-facet framework. The result is the first book to bring together contributions from various fields and integrate them into a single conceptual framework. The book will be useful both for academics and for practitioners. It includes a balance of theoretical and empirical chapters, and presents original empirical data drawn from field research in a variety of settings.

4 out of 5 stars Clunky but worth it.......2007-08-16

The book is, as other reviewers have observed, a goldmine of information. I have yet to find any source that cuts quite so broad a swath through the material, giving the reader insights into numerous topics: myth, history, religious practice, military strategy, diet, architecture, social organization, and more. Moreover, the text is richly illustrated with diagrams, photographs, and maps.

Each section also ends with helpful, reasonably well-organized, suggestions for further reading.

That said, the work is a bit too textbook-y for my tastes. The organizational categories seem forced at times, applying an overly traditional, European model of how to divide indigenous cultural elements.

The book, like a textbook, frequently repeats basic information. I presume this was intended to allow the reader to dip into a section without having to cross-reference many others. But that effort seems too haphazard to achieve that end and many times I had to flip through many different sections in order to form even a partial picture of what was going on.

Topics of obvious concern for a modern reader (like the degree to which women could participate in organized religious rituals or in society in general) were often ignored or treated so lightly as to be ambiguous.

Still, all that said, the book is a treasure chest of information and a wonderful place to begin studying about Aztec and Mesoamerican culture, even if it is very clearly not the place to stop.

        5 out of 5 stars A fine reference.......2006-09-24

High school to college-level students will find Handbook to Life in The Aztec World a fine reference, providing a thematic approach to the Aztec world which surveys geography, civilization development, Aztec arts and architecture, daily life, and customs and beliefs. Each chapter pairs an article with an extensive bibliography and the books also packs in over a hundred line drawings, photos and maps.

This book is an excellent source of information for anyone to read on the Aztecs. It covers most aspects on the Aztecs from history to linguistics. Aguilar brings fresh ideas and concepts that are worthy of discussion. Handbook To Life In The Aztec World has great illustrations.

              5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Essential.......2004-08-16

I have been investing and reading investment advisories for almost 30 yeaers and this is without a doubt one of the best books I have seen, especially for new investors. Although the book is primarily directed to those with 401(k) plans, the advice and strategy are applicable to all investors. Instead of a dry text book, the material is presented in understandable language that makes you feel like a friend is sitting across the table talking to you. Mr. Rogers cuts to the heart of the issues in a very objective, logical format without all of the "filler" that so many other authors feel obligated to include. It is a concise, easily read book with concepts that can be absorbed and applied by almost anyone. The key, as the author notes, is having the discipline to follow the principles outlined. This book should be provided by employers to all employees with their 401k) plan materials.

4 out of 5 stars If I'd only known ..........2004-07-19

I used to joke that I'd never live to retirement - now I'm afraid I will! If I'd had this information earlier in my career I'd be better prepared for retirment - now I'm scrambling to incorporate the principles in the book and to make up for lost time. It's a "must read" - especially for younger workers just starting to save for retirement.

              5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2004-07-16

This is a great book for anyone who is interested in planning for their retirement future and searching for an investment strategy in today's complex market conditions. Investors on all levels will find this book informative and easy to comprehend.

I am 25 years old and never thought about saving for my retirement until my mother gave me this book. It is so easy to follow and understand. I started contribution to my companies 401(k) plan before I even finished the book! Honestly, I never really paid that much attention to the fact that a plan was even available.

The writers did a great job putting this book together and I will recommend it to everyone!

I am so excited about my future! Maybe I can be a millionare too!

"The 401(k) will turn out to be the greatest systemic financial hoax ever perpetrated on an unsuspecting public," write William Wolman and Anne Colamosca in the opening pages of this book of financial muckraking. They compare this popular form of retirement planning with the Dutch tulip mania of the 17th century, the South Sea Bubble of the 18th century, and the stock-market crash of 1929--and suggest that something worse is on the horizon for people who are planning to live their golden years off the proceeds of 401(k) investing. Wrongly believing that the boom years of the 1990s were typical, "most Americans do not have the resources to ride out the bad markets of the kind that we believe will prevail for the next decade," write Wolman (former chief economist for BusinessWeek) and Colamosca (a veteran journalist). They advise current investors to put their 401(k) money into bonds and believe companies should be banned from matching employee contributions with its own stock (a lesson they draw from the Enron debacle). The authors want even more, however: "What is needed is an FDR-style New Deal for the nation's pension system." The Great 401(k) Hoax is a piece of investment populism, potentially doing for the CNBC crowd what Donald L. Barlett and James B. Steele did for political junkies. --John Miller

              Book Description

How the 401(k) has come to dominate the American family's long-term investment portfolio, why it is inadequate--and what to do about it.

According to business and finance journalists Bill Wolman and Anne Colamosca, the American public has been hoodwinked: 401(k)s, the most popular mechanism for retirement investing, were established to satisfy corporate, not individual, interests. They are replacing defined benefit-pension plans at an alarming rate and are vulnerable to the vicissitudes of the market, which--if history serves as our guide--is destined for at least a decade of lackluster performance.

Drawing on primary historical and contemporary data, Wolman and Colamosca build a compelling case against the 401(k) as a tool for ensuring long-term financial security. They urge individuals and families to diversify their savings and investments, building conservative portfolios that include bonds, high-dividend stocks, and savings. In the process, they explore the colorful social history of our love-hate relationship with the stock market and address many key questions facing any family today, such as: How do I accumulate enough wealth to educate my children and retire comfortably? How secure are my sources of income and how can I anticipate change? Timely and incisive, The Great 401(k) Hoax is guaranteed to inspire debate and action from the water cooler to the boardroom to the voting booth.

2 out of 5 stars Lost Interest Quickly..........2007-01-06

I have been reading a lot of books lately regarding investments and finances. This book trips itself up on some kind of a political agenda (I have yet to figure out if the authors were trying to smear Republicans, Democrats, or both), so much so that I was completely distracted by what the authors had to say and quit reading after a few chapters. The political jabs were distracting and they made the authors seem less credible. The book had too much of a "doomsday/completely hopeless future" feel to it, it almost was painful to read, it made me squirm inside!
There are many books out there that can offer a lot more help (and hope) than this one, if you are looking to secure your financial future.

2 out of 5 stars What Can I Do About It?.......2006-08-23

The Title of the book states "Why your family is at risk, what you can do about it?" After nearly 188 pages on the first part of this phrase, the authors talk about "stillwater" investing which seems to be "random walk" by another name. The authors complain loudly and convincingly (with some irritants mentioned by other reviewers), but I'd have expected similar vigor and greater clarity in listing out the solutions....disappointed.

              1 out of 5 stars 401 (K): Hype, intolerable, opinionated poopfest.......2005-09-08

Like several other reviewers who I should have read first, I found myself seeing a loooong stretch to this book's short stack of information and too much snarky cereal filler. You'll be angry, trust me.

              Book Description

Today's 401(k) account investors are looking for authoritative answers and reassurance. Elizabeth Opalka, a tax attorney who monitors federal legislative and regulatory developments daily, provides both. The recent corporate accounting scandals and a stock market roller coaster ride put many of retirement plans on hold. We know now that 401(k) investing isn't foolproof. Congress enacted the most important investor protection law since the 1930s, yet there are limits to what the new law can do to protect 401(k) accounts. This book emphasizes the benefits of 401(k) accounts while paying special attention to risk tolerance, diversification, and the factors that 401(k) plan participants should consider in allocating their retirement savings across their investment options. It also includes information about how 401(k) accounts may fare in the hands of tax collectors, divorce lawyers, and heirs and explains the steps to take now to minimize the damage in each of these scenarios.
