Book Description
Larry Swedroe has long maintained that investors and fund managers have had no sustainable success when chasing hot individual stocks, andthat it is much wiser to buy baskets of stocks from prominent indexesalways selected from a variety of major well-run companies.Inevitable market rises (and dips) and the miracle of compounding will build, over a minimum two decades, real wealth. This book brings together fourteen truths for investing anddiscusses how careful investing can capture many of todays big-company stock valuations that will be seen in time to have been tremendous buys.
Customer Reviews:
The simple way to invest.......2007-07-08
Larry's books are about "passive" investing, which if you are going to put your life savings to work is the ONLY way to do it. The biggest benefits of passive investing is the reduction of volatility and increased non-correlated diversification. It also removes the "noise" of the Wall Street hawkers.
Larry has strong feelings about his subject, so if you're not doing his way, he will tell you about the "loser's game" you're playing. Hopefully you'll get it.
More people should tune in passive investing.
Take the Gambling out of Investing.......2007-07-02
Excellent book on the unpredictability of investments and investors.
It essentially says investing in individual stocks is speculating (gambling), not investing. Over the long haul, individual investors (event the top fund managers) don't beat the overall market.
Invest in the S&P 500 or other major index and you will build a fine nest egg for retirement, according to the book.
This is not a book for someone who wants to double their money in 2 years. It is for the person who wants to turn $100,000 into $800,000 in 21 years (assuming 7% returns that double your money every seven years). Not a bad end for an extremely diversified and responsible investment plan.
So if you are 44 years old, and you have $200,000 to invest, you could safely build it to $1.6 million when you turn 65, if this book is correct. I think it is.
Easily one of the Top 10 Investment books of all time..........2007-03-06
I am a big fan of Larry Swedroe's writings - his books, his posts on the Vanguard Diehards Forum, his articles. I've read all of his books, and I have to rate this as his best book.
He distills and presents a lot of Finance research in this book in a very very readable form. The advice in this book is timeless. Among many other things, this book has the best discussion of the equity value premium.
For around 10 bucks, the price of 2 (maybe three lattes), the average (even advanced) investor can get an education that will serve him/her well for the rest of their investing lifetime.
Looking forward to Larry's next book.
Another Swedroe Classic.......2006-05-29
I was very impressed with this book and give it an A. Swedroe's investment advice is excellent and the writing style is very easy and fun to read.
I read all 4 of Larry Swedroe's stock investing books in the last few weeks, and although they are excellent books and I agree with most of his recommendations, he tends to re-use the same information in each book. To keep this book straight in my mind, compared with the other 3 books, this review is structured along his Outline of the book.
Truth 1: Active Investing Is a Loser's Game: It Must Be So
Larry lays out the case why active investing always loses to passive investing.
Truth 2: The Past Performance of an Actively Managed Fund Is a Very Poor Predictor of Its Future Performance
He does a good job of citing many studies demonstrating that past performance is not a good predictor of future performance.
Truth 3: If Skilled Professionals Don't Succeed, It Is Unlikely That Individual Investors Will
Truth 4: The Interests of Wall Street and the Financial Media Are Not Aligned with Those of Investors
He points out why passive investing is not promoted by Wall Street and the financial media.
Truth 5: Risk and Reward Are Related: Great Companies Provide Low Expected Returns
Truth 6: The Price You Pay Matters
Truth 7: The Most Likely Way to Achieve Above Average Returns Is to Stop Trying to Beat the Market
Truth 8: Buying Individual Stocks and Sector Funds Is Speculating, Not Investing
Truth 9: Reversion to the Mean of Earnings Growth Rates Is One of the Most Powerful Forces in the Universe
Truth 10: The Forecasts of Market Strategists and Analysts Have No Value, Except as Entertainment
Truth 11: Taxes Are Often the Largest Expense Investors Incur
Truth 12: Knowledge of Financial History Is Critical to Successful Investing
Truth 13: Adding International Assets to a Portfolio Reduces Risk
Although I agree with the author's claim that foreign stocks help reduce portfolio risk, I do have trouble believing or following his recommendation of 20 to 40% asset allocation in foreign stocks. I feel more comfortable with a 10 to 20% allocation to foreign stocks.
Truth 14: There Is No One Right Portfolio, but There Is One That Is Right for You
He points out that investing is not an exact science, and the optimum portfolio is difficult to achieve. Each person must get comfortable with the risks and complexity of their allocations. He also gives a convincing argument for skipping mid-cap stocks in favor of only small and large cap stocks.
Conclusion
A: The Enron. Debacle: Lessons to Be Learned
It was interesting to see how some of the supposedly smartest brains in the investing world loaded up on Enron stock, including the Janus funds.
Appendix B: More Investment Truths You. Must Know to Be a Successful Investor
Appendix C: Investment Vehicle Recommendations
Great list of investment choices to implement you asset allocation plan.
D: The Home Financing Decision:To Borrow or Not
Nice analysis of an issue than many investors struggle with. He combines a nice financial analysis with the "able to sleep at night" test.
All-in-all, a great book for serious investors who manage their own portfolios. To me, his four books are very similar. If you choose one of the four books to read, I think you will get 90% of his message versus spending the time to read all 4 books.
I would suggest companion books to supplement this book including The Richest Man in Babylon, Bogle on Mutual Funds, The Millionaire Next Door, The 4 Pillars of Investing, A Random Walk Down Wall Street, Index Mutual Funds: How to Simplify Your Life and Beat the Pros, the Coffeehouse Investor, and the Bogleheads Guide to Investing.
The best investment approach may also be the simplest........2004-02-02
The investing approach espoused by Swedroe is actually among the simplest and least time consuming approaches available - that of passive index investing with occasional portfolio rebalancing. Yet he doesn't recommend it because it is simple, but because the research supports it as the best approach to yield the highest actual returns over time. The caveat "over time" is the key, which is what most people are interested in - not short term run-ups followed by disappointing losses. And "actual returns" since many people fail to consider trading costs, taxes, and other considerations that reduce their returns. One interesting study alluded to in this book and expounded on in his other books relates to the Value Line survey, which demonstrates market-beating returns and is highly rated in the Hulbert newsletter. Yet after considering trading and other costs, the returns underperform the market. Reality often stands in stark contrast to what we want to believe.

Description:
Waste to energy conversion is based on the classification of waste. In-flight catering wastes resulting from Egypt Airlines economy class passengers were classified. The solid waste stream generated contains plastic, paper, left-over waste food and aluminum. The type of meal served varies according to the period of flight and so the quantity and content of the waste stream. It was found that the waste generation rate varied from 61.3 to 265 g according to the meal type. Breakfast snack meal generates the highest weight of waste which recorded an average of 265 g. Plastic waste generated varied from 39.6% to 64.6% by weight for the various types of meals served. A total amount of 725 tons were generated annually from organic waste (paper, plastic and food waste) among which a non combustible 39.4 tons of aluminum. The calorific value for each generated item is calculated and the total energy potential reached up to 14.3 TJ annually.

Book Description
Answer the bankruptcy questions that keep you up at night. Trying to decide whether or not to file for bankruptcy? This new Quick & Legal book from consumer debt expert Robin Leonard addresses questions and concerns that may be keeping you up into the wee hours.
If I file for bankruptcy... Will I wipe out all of my debts? Probably. And if not all of them, at least most. (See Chapter 3.)
Will I lose my house? If you are up to date on your mortgage payments or can get up to date, you're not likely to lose your house. (See Chapter 4.)
Will I lose my apartment? Not if you're current on your rent. (See Chapter 4.)
Can I keep my car and other property? Most likely. Most people lose no property when they file for bankruptcy. (See Chapter 5.)
Can I keep my credit cards? Probably not--but there's no reason to. (See Chapters 6 and 9.)
Will I lose my job? No. An employer may not fire you solely because you filed for bankruptcy. (See Chapter 7.)
Will I lose custody of my children? No. Divorce judges see a lot of people who file for bankruptcy. (See Chapter 7.)
Will I go to jail? Not unless you commit perjury, defraud the bankruptcy court or commit a similar act. (See Chapter 7.)
Will someone from the bankruptcy court visit my home or business? No. (See Chapter 7.)
Can I move? Yes. (See Chapter 7.)
Can I change jobs? Yes. (See Chapter 7.)
Can I get divorced? Yes. (See Chapter 7.)
Will my friends and neighbors find out? It's unlikely, unless you tell them. (See Chapter 7.)
Is it hard to file? It's about as hard as filing a 1040 long-form tax return. (See Chapter 8.)
Will I be able to get credit in the future? Yes--and more than likely, fairly soon after your bankruptcy case ends. (See Chapter 9.)
Will I be able to rent an apartment in the future? This is the one area in which people sometimes run into problems. But there are steps you can take to help yourself. (See Chapter 9.)
Is bankruptcy even necessary? Not everyone needs to file or should file. An alternative might be the answer. (See Chapter 10.)

Customer Reviews:
Excellent book.......2004-12-30
I read this book (borrowed through the library) not because of financial difficulties, but because I wanted to brush up on some technicalities of bankruptcy. In the past I've had clients take bankruptcy and I've had to deal with the bankrutpcy proceedings. Although I do not currently do this sort of work I expect to enter another profession in the future where knowledge of the bankruptcy law and the individual states exemptions will make my job much easier. This book is an excellent overview of the bankrupcty law and I highly recommend it to anybody who is considering taking bankruptcy or deals with bankruptcy either directly or indirectly in their job.
Bankruptcy - Nolo Press guide .......2004-10-20
There are eleven chapters that cover Chapter 7 and 13 bankruptcies. A bankruptcy is either liquidation (7) or reorganization (11,12,13). They can last from a few months (7) to several years (11). Chapter 12 pertains to a large debt due to a family farm.
The questions and answers are categorized for Chapter 7 and 13, like the trustee and going to court. The meeting of creditors takes place 20-40 days after you file. My meeting took place a few weeks ago. This is a meeting you must attend and have no input into the date and time it takes place.
Filing the papers costs $209 in California. Once they have been filed all creditors must cease to contact you, utilities will not be disconnected if they were going to be, an eviction will be stopped, foreclosures and judgments get an automatic stay. It is mentioned that in some states loss of driver's license happens because of a liability for damages stemming from an automobile accident. The automatic stay will stop this from occurring as well. If you are dependent on the vehicle for family support filing bankruptcy might be the reason to keep your license.
Filing bankruptcy does not stop the enforcement of child support or alimony. The book goes into this topic in various chapters. Federal, Local and State taxes are not discharged through Chapter 7. Student loans are not covered either, although if you can prove hardship a portion might get discharged.
There is a checklist in a box format that covers each chapter. The back cover has a listing of questions referencing which chapter is covering that topic. There are some cartoon sketches in black and white that take reduce the stress level of this process. The index breaks down all the topics.
It is also recommended that your maiden and married names be cited in your papers. The section with questions about how the bankruptcy affects your personal life discuss employment and living. This should not impact your job and there is no reason why they would know about it, unless your wages were being garnished. This will be listed on your credit report and you will need to be diligent to make sure the creditors report this accurately. Filing for bankruptcy has nothing to do with jail, you did not break the law or lose your right to vote.
Bankruptcy: Is it the right solution to your debt problems will help you learn the schedules, how to pick your exemptions and decide if you are using a paralegal, lawyer or doing the forms yourself. This is a great guide to show you all the necessary documents needed to prepare with examples.
The author is a consumer debt expert. At the end of each chapter is a box to remind you that it is time to fill out the questions in the checklist. Businesses cannot file for Chapter 13 bankruptcy. There is also some information for newly married spouses to determine if both should be named in the bankruptcy.
Great, Fantastic........2002-10-12
This is really a must have. I handled my own chapter 13, start to finish with this one. Even handled the emergency filing to get mean ole nasty pasty creditors that were harassing me intentionally off my case. I was even able to file a complaint with them thru the bankruptcy courts. This book references this, and I called the clerks office, and checked out web sites, and this book gave me the confidence, to file a complaint against these creditors. The interderagatorys are fanstasic. THese really helped me out, at my creditors meetings. I was able to even able to pursue a wage garnishment out of my soon to b X's pay check. This was the only way I was going to keep my stuff. I really enjoyed I must say representing my self. It is really not that hard, and more of u folks out there need to try it. They really don't chew ya up and spit ya out like everyone believes. It was not that stress ful, after everything was filed. Actually, It was nice to bask in the quiteness of the emeregency filing. My phone quit ringing. It was soooo nice. This one belongs rite up there with my bible. It was a thrill I must say to stand in line to file my paper work, schedules, and yes, I even filed a motion.! It was great standing there next to some of my towns high power bankruptcy attorneys. ONly thing, I have to say, when attorneys, start offering free advise, have a pen ready to write. I also learned be nice as pie to the clerks. They are so busy, and swamped with work. U will be glad you had patience. Patience is a virtue on this one as far as filings go. THe creditors meetings went well, I even drafted my own propsals of what I wanted, to happend. I even learned how to contest the amount of my truck, and did so, and requested the interest rate be dropped. I got just what I wanted. It actually was not as a terrible as we are taught in society to think. Oh my she/he file bankruptcy. It was not that bad, and also the bankruptcy court I went to, had a class on how to balance your budget, and it was very informational. Dom't feel bad if you have to do this someday. It happens to the bestest of us. IF you do this is definitely the book you wanna seek. I have compared up to some of the competetions, and I felt this one was the easy one to use. Plainest english. Simplest terms. I didnot feel intimidated at all by this book. This book covered all the bases, and then some. Others books I feel were not as complete as this one was. I researched books and sat down and looked thru them at my local book store. THis one won hands down. I must say, it is flexible, easy to tote with you, easy to put in babys bag, and easy to tote on bike with grocerys, and easy to clean up. I spilled coffee on mine... wipes up great. Later, Betty Hogges. :)

Interesting, helpful reading, now I'm ready to retire!.......1999-01-05
At first I thought this book would be boring, but after I read the first chapter, I decided to read on. Soon I was finished with the book, and I knew twice what I knew before about retirement. The worksheets are very helpful. After I filled them out I felt that I could look back on them at any time and use them as a reference to my financial status. Good book, I recommend it to anyone needing to beef up on their retirement knowledge, no matter what age they might be.
