Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Great Treatise on Wealth Management.......2001-07-20

Mr. Evensky's book has had a profound impact on my wealth management philosophy. He is very effective in blending the broad scope of investment management theory with "real world", practical application. I found it particularly useful because it is not a book written by an academic who has never sat across the table from a client and held their hand through the good times and the tough. This is a must read for any serious manager of wealth.

A. Todd Black, CFP

5 out of 5 stars Excellent mixture of practical advice and theory.......1999-02-27

I had expected a typical fluff, despite Evensky's fine reputation. I has very surprised at this mixture of practical advice and theory. Pointers are given to other sources for those more theoretically inclined. Some of the practical advice (software recommendations and such) won't age as gracefully as the text itself, these packages will become obsolete before the book. Nevertheless, I'd highly recommend it for anyone who is looking to understand the basics of risk/reward, the importance of asset allocation, and the theoretical material that led to these ideas.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for all investment advisors!.......1997-03-16

Harold generously shares his knowledge, not only in solid investment thought, but in practical application. If you've ever wanted to know how to practically apply investment research to your own portfolios, this is the book that will do it

      Book Description

Make sure your culinary arts students are prepared for the "real world!"

Standing the Heat: Assuring Curriculum Quality in Culinary Arts and Gastronomy chronicles the creation and development of an undergraduate degree program in culinary arts at the Dublin Institute of Technology. Written by the head of the institute's School of Culinary Arts and Food Technology, Standing the Heat is a handbook for developing a curriculum that maximizes career opportunities for students as an alternative to the limited path of instructional training offered in hotel management or hospitality degrees. The book details the merger of a vocational education with a more cognitive education that prepares chefs to be more than mere "cooking operatives," introducing educational concepts that establish the culinary arts as a discipline deserving of serious scholarly attention.

Standing the Heat: Assuring Curriculum Quality in Culinary Arts and Gastronomy is a first-hand account of efforts by the School of Culinary Arts and Food Technology to raise culinary arts education to the degree level as a remedy to the traditional formal education and training that have failed to prepare students for life in the "real world." The book assembles a course of study that produces culinarians who are capable and responsible decision makers, ready to meet the challenges of operating a business while incorporating the values of food safety, customer care, ethics, and passion into the highest quality foodservice.

Topics addressed in the book include:

      admission criteria
      teaching staff recruitment and development
      physical resources
      course management
      student guidance
      examinations and syllabuses
      course review
      and much more!

Standing the Heat: Assuring Curriculum Quality in Culinary Arts and Gastronomy is an important step in establishing the culinary arts as a viable curriculum in higher education. This book is essential for hotel school program directors and practitioners, researchers, academics, and students in the field of culinary arts.

              1 out of 5 stars Almost useless..........1999-10-18

I didn't take a thing away from this book except that couples fight over money, that couples fight over money, and that couples fight over money.

I was hoping to find information and advice that would help my transition from being a single person to a married one, but didn't get anything beyond suggestions like keeping a "Fight Diary" so that we can see trends in our fighting habits.

"Personal Finance For Dummies (2nd Edition)" was much more useful.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guide with real life advice on budgeting.......1998-07-07

If you've been looking for a guide on controlling the money flow in your household that goes beyond the elementary suggestions of setting up categories and recording expenses, something any good PC home finance program can handle, this is it. Adriane G. Berg's experience as a divorce attorney has exposed her to every kind of squabble possible between spouses over money. In this book she has laid out concrete suggestions and a methodology of handling money that will preserve each partner's self esteem and minimize arguments. So often after reading other texts, I am tempted to ask, "Yeah, but how you really do that with your spouse." Here are the answers. I would recommend this to anyone who like to improve budgeting and funds control in their household.

A Personal Finance Classic that Changed Forever How We Think, Feel, and Act about Money

Ten years ago, Suze Orman, America’s most celebrated finance expert, transformed the way we all view personal finance with her groundbreaking The 9 Steps to Financial Freedom. This New York Times bestselling blockbuster broke from the ranks of traditional money management books by looking at finances from an entirely new perspective, advising people to approach money from an emotional standpoint in order to achieve their financial dreams. By emphasizing the psychological and spiritual power money has in our lives, while still including information on all aspects of our financial daily activities, Orman has helped millions break through the barriers that hold them back. She is now our country’s leading personal finance expert, and here is the book that started it all.

Orman is back in a brand-new, fully updated edition to The 9 Steps to Financial Freedom, her personal finance classic that offers thoughtful, easy-to-follow steps toward a life of financial freedom. Here is the most up-to-the-minute information on a wide range of financial topics that plague us today: credit card debt, bankruptcy, paying for education, wills versus trusts, the best retirement account, life insurance, and more. Combining real-life recommendations with Suze’s own brand of inspiration and motivation, this is the only guide you’ll need to provide for yourself and your family.

As Orman shows, managing money is so much more than a matter of balancing your checkbook or picking the right investments. It’s about redefining financial freedom and realizing that you are worth far more than your money. Let America’s leading personal finance expert show you how.

Does Orman know her stuff? Definitely. Is this book concise, well written and to the point, a no nonsense primer on achieving financial stability? Yes it is. Does Orman pander to the lowest common denominator, i.e. those with virtually no financial acumen? In my opinion, yes she does.

I recently read an interview with Orman in the Wall street Journal where she claimed that of her $25 million in net worth she only has a million in the stock market. That's 4%. Most financial experts would assert that's way too little. But Orman's not an investor, she's a common sense lady with a brass tacks approach to money, and it serves her well.

And I just read a book I like even better than Suze. Dave Barry's "Money Secrets" contains a dead on skewering of Orman. If you're familiar with Orman's approach and like Barry, you have to check this out. Dave Barry's Money Secrets: Like: Why Is There a Giant Eyeball on the Dollar?

When Suze Orman was 13 she watched her father dive into the flames of his burning take-out chicken shack in order to rescue his cash register. In that moment Orman learned that money was more important than life itself. And so it became her quest to be rich. But years later, when Orman became a wealthy broker with a huge investment firm, she was profoundly unhappy. What went wrong? She had not yet achieved financial freedom. In her nine-step program, Orman covers the ingredients to financial success--confronting our beliefs and fears, learning the nuts and bolts (and insiders secrets!) of savvy management, and finding the spiritual trust that leads to abundance.

              Amazon.com Audio Review

Suze Orman's reading of the audio version of her bestselling book The 9 Steps to Financial Freedom is nothing if not intense. Coming at you with the force of a summer hurricane heading for Cape Fear, Orman recounts one horror story after another to help us avoid financial disaster. But, if her insistent, somewhat graceless voice takes some getting used to, it's well worth the adjustment. After awhile, you'll be glad she's doing the talking, blending years of experience as a certified financial planner with credible authority and, more important, a passionate belief in our individual abilities to handle our own finances. There's no question that Suze Orman cares about how we manage our money.

To show her commitment to our financial well-being, Orman packs this abridgment with an unusual combination of practical advice and psychological exercises. During our three hours with her, we receive arguably the best education available on mutual funds, estate planning, income taxes--even life insurance. But we also learn how to "face our fear" of money by exploring our past for the source of the fear. Later, she tells us that giving money to charity actually helps us release this fear. And, in perhaps her most startling step ("trust yourselves more than others"), Orman suggests we follow our inner voice while making investment decisions, a voice she believes comes from God.

Whatever you may thing of that revelation, it's impossible to be put off by Orman's candid, idiosyncratic approach to money management. This is one self-help tape that lives up to the genre. Listeners who stick with Orman till the end will be truly inspired to take money matters into their own hands--and they'll likely get started immediately. (Running time: 10 hours and 43 minutes, two cassettes) --Ann Senechal

              Book Description

Suze Orman has transformed the concept of personal finance for millions by teaching us how to gain control of our money -- so that money does not control us. She goes beyond the nuts and bolts of managing money to explore the psychological, even spiritual power money has in our lives. The 9 Steps to Financial Freedom is the first personal finance book that gives you not only the knowledge of how to handle money, but also the will to break through all the barriers that hold you back.

Combining real-life recommendations with the motivation to overcome financial anxieties, Suze Orman offers the keys to providing for yourself and your family, including:

              * seeing how your past holds the key to your financial future
              * facing your fears and creating new truths
              * trusting yourself more than you trust others
              * being open to receiving all that you are meant to have
              * understanding the lessons of the money cycle

The 9 Steps to Financial Freedom is useful advice and inspiration from the leading voice in personal finance. As Orman shows, managing money is far more than a matter of balancing your checkbook or picking the right investments. It's about redefining financial freedom -- and realizing that you are worth far more than your money.

3 out of 5 stars This was exactly what I needed; maybe not what you need.......2007-09-26

This book laid out the basics for someone who had to start from square one-half. I had no expectations and was pleased with what I found.

              The Good:
              1. I have found the idea of looking into your past/emotions about money to be useful.
              2. Nowhere else have I found such clear explanations of so much investment lingo. I feel like I will be able to understand Businessweek much better now.

              The Bad:
              1. I can see how high expectations could lead to disappointment; the claims of psycho-babble are not altogether wrong.
              2. I think Suze Orman does not appreciate how good she is with money; most of us should probably not invest by instinct, the way she says we should.

              Verdict:
Excellent reference for rock bottom beginner wondering where to go next, but don't believe everything you read.

              5 out of 5 stars Financial Security.......2007-09-02

Orman's books do help people create a more financially secure future. Her books are deep and mutifaceted in terms of the approach to financial issues.

4 out of 5 stars Outdated but most things still apply.......2007-07-03

I'm finding out that by reading some of Suze's books, they might be a little outdated. However, the basic principles apply. You need to do something to set yourself free from the financial burden and this is a great book to start with.

5 out of 5 stars I just love Suze Orman.......2007-05-26

My boyfriend had this book on his shelf for years....a guft from his mother. I decided after a few years I was going to read it.
The financial lessons in the book are great! I learned about trusts, wills, etc. Things I would not have thought of, and Suze explains them in a very down to earth, non-intimidating way. She usually blends a true story in.
Because I loved the book so much I started watching the show. Suze is very eccentric and does have some crazy ideas. But, more than a financial planner she is a people person. A very opinionated people person. My boyfriend could not stomach the show because of her eccentric ways- but he came around when I raved about the advice, and things I'd learned.
Suze is just Suze.....so if you've ever seen her show-- she writes like she talks....A no BS kind of gal.
From analyzing the way in which you organize your money in your wallet, to respecting it- you learn the inner reasons why you don't always create wealth for yourself. It may seem far-fetched. However, I am a strong believer that the mind is very powerful. I've done much better financially speaking since I heeded her advice!

              4 out of 5 stars Very informative!.......2007-03-12

I was really impressed with this audiobook. It gave tons of useful information, and Suze explains it in a way that anyone could understand. She also gives great "real-world" examples. This is definitely one of very few audiobooks that you can keep and listen to again later to refresh your memory on a topic. Highly recommended!!

I mean it says that right on this Amazon website and it is advertized as a mini book so why would any intelligent (key word: intelligent) think otherwise before buying it?

Next time before posting and making a fool out of yourself, why not try reading the Amazon website first? Good advice? Your welcome!

              4 out of 5 stars Insightful.......2003-10-15

What makes Ms. Orman's book standout from the field (she covers most of the topics other writers do) are two very useful insights: (1) that our psychology and subconscous has a lot to do with how we do (or do not) manage money; and (2) money, in and of itself, does not have power over us; indeed, it is the other way around -- the way we manage our money speaks about who we are. Other than these two insights (which are elloquently communicated) Ms. Orman covers the basics -- get out of debt, make sure your family is protected (emergency fund, life insurance, etc.), invest for retirement and college for the kids. She does a very good job in the relatively short book of covering these fields in sufficient depth. I would also recommend her most recent book "The Laws of Money, The Lessons of life...". A note to those who dislike her philosophical/religious diversions -- do not let them stand in the way of receiving some excellent advice.

              5 out of 5 stars Don't understand the 1 star reviews.......2003-09-09

I have read several reviews here (obviously by the same person) attacking this book and insulting Suze because of i t's size.

EXCUSE ME--but the information states clearly that this is a miniture book. The price might also be a clue.

If you were "taken by surprise", then all I can suggets is learn how to read.

Good supplement to the full length paperback of the same name.

3 out of 5 stars Suze's 9 step to financial freedom.... miniature edition.......2003-07-28

You get what you pay for. Small edition gives small information.
This book can be read in 30 minutes by slow readers !
There were some very good personal stories and some lessons that can be drawn from them. The unabridged version may have more offerings but one would probably want to move on to the next book by this author.

2 out of 5 stars Be careful what you buy!!.......2003-06-19

This is not a book, not a real one anyways. This is just a sypnosis of the real thing. It fits in the palm of my hand!!
