Customer Reviews:
Outdated book that needs to be updated............2007-03-03
I made a mistake when I read the reviews. I forgot to look at how old the reviews are before buying the book. They are all dated in 2000 or 2001. This book needs to be updated. It is interesting but note that the suggestions are over six years old. There are better ways now to buy and sell stocks. The authors suggest going through a certain company to buy stocks in your child's name. It is much easier just to buy them through an online broker and tell your child that those particular stocks are for them. (You can even create a separate account and tell your child that this account is their account.) Plus, there are now online brokers that will do trades for free (limited number per month). The book does have some helpful concepts on getting your child interested in stocks, but some are too time consuming. Today's Internet-savy child knows that she can easily get the charts and graphs for free from online brokers. She does not have to spend hours trying to create them herself. Instead, she should spend that time researching the companies. I'm half-way through the book. I'll come back and write more when I am finished. Oh, and I should note that the quality of the printing is not very good. It took my eyes a while to adjust to the small font. .... I never did finish the book. I found other instead.
Wow The Dow! The Complete Guide To Teaching Your Kids How to.......2001-10-31
This is the type of book I wish I had when I first became interested in investing. It is so elementary that I can actually understand what the stock market is all about, and how I personally can benefit from getting myself educated about investing. What's more my teenage daughter is learning about investing and investment clubs and students from her class are getting together weekly to talk about the stock market, using this book as a guide. This is a wonderful book to introduce kids and teenagers to investing.
extremely informative.......2001-03-09
I found this book to be extremely helpful in decoding a very intimidating topic. The forum in which the book was layed out made for an easy and exciting read. I finally feel comfortable and adept to invest, in addition to having various resources for doing research. I highly recommend this book and have bought several copies for friends and family with and without children.
A great book for kids and adults alike!.......2000-11-29
This is one of the easiest to read and understadn investment books I've ever found. Teaching children the value of long-term investment and money is a wonderful gift to give anyone. Adults will find the clear explanations, sound advice, and tips on getting started no matter how much you have to be valuable as well.
This and Jason Kelly's "Neatest Little Guide..." series are my favorite introductory investment books.
E-Trade Meets Sesame Street!.......2000-08-28
"Wow The Dow" is an easy to read book geared toward showing parents and children how incredibly easy it is to invest in the stock market. Not only will this book strengthen your parent child bond but you will be amazed at how easy it is to invest in the stock market. Inside there are easy to read graphs, games, puzzles and too many other neat little side bars to mention. The side bars themselves make great reading.
The best part about this book is that it teaches adults and children that you don't have to be Bill Gates to be an investor. In fact, you can begin your investment portfolio with less money than you spend buying this book.
Being a stock market novice myself, this book taught me how to identify companies, learn everything about the company and most important, how and where to buy their stock. It also stresses the importance of not using a full commission broker to do what you can easily do yourself for a fraction of the cost.
After reading this book, I find myself very hesitant about unwise spending. I now have a little voice in my head that is saying, "If I invest that $1.05 that I spend at WaWa for coffee, every morning, and I use that money to buy one share of EMC every 6-9 months, and the stock does a two for one split every Spring, how much is that coffee really costing me? "
I don't have any children, but I can only imagine where I would be today if my parents showed me how easy it is to start investing in the stock market when I was 10, 7 or even 4 years old. This book uses true life scenarios where one of the author's daughters invested two thousand dollars when she was a small child and now that money will more than cover her college education.
Do yourself a favor and read this book. Although this book is very new, it won't be long before it's on every coffee table in America.

Book Description
Most scientists, engineers, and other professionals in technical fields are quite comfortable using their analytical skills and carrying out the most detail-oriented research. Yet when it comes to communicating highly technical information to others in a manner that is both clear and concise, even the best minds are often at a loss.
Model Letters and Memos: A Handbook for Scientists and Engineers shows technically oriented individuals how to communicate their ideas clearly to a wide range of audiences. The author uses two distinct formulas to help compose all kinds of effective, lucidly written correspondence.
The first formula is a four-step process called "AIDA," which stands for Attention, Interest, Desire, and Action. This formula enables busy professionals to organize their thoughts and communicate them clearly, directly, and accurately.
The second formula covered in the book, "IBC," or Introduction, Body, and Conclusion, shows how to break down every memo into its three most important parts. Step-by-step and with specific examples, the author illustrates how to set up an introduction, communicate the desired information, and develop a conclusion.
In addition to these formulas, you'll learn how to: avoid the common pitfalls of writing letters and memos; make correspondence more effective; make lengthy documents more readable; and virtually guarantee that a recipient will read and understand the basic message.
You'll also find two chapters of boilerplate letters and memos on more than 125 different subjects, all written by technical professionals who are also accomplished writers and communicators. Because they can easily be used as templates for crafting similar communications, these sample letters are included on the computer disk accompanying the text.
For any technical professional who needs to communicate in writing clearly, quickly, and accurately, Model Letters and Memos: A Handbook for Scientists and Engineers is an indispensable, time-saving resource.
An invaluable resource for technical professionals who want to communicate their ideas quickly and effectively
Model Letters and Memos: A Handbook for Scientists and Engineers takes the struggle out of the writing process by demonstrating how to put any kind of information, no matter how technical, into a form that can be easily read and understood.
This practical, time-saving guide shows you how to:
- Structure an effective letter/memo
- Create and maintain interest in your correspondence
- Elicit the desired response from your reader
- Make a lengthy document more readable
- Avoid the ten most common mistakes letter/memo writers make
This indispensable resource also offers nearly 200 examples of effective technical letters and memos and an accompanying computer disk that includes all the letters and memos in the text for easy and immediate application.

Customer Reviews:
I think the Author is very cocky and concieted.......2005-09-11
This book Isn't any good at all.He thinks he knows everything but yet knows nothing. He makes everyone do his dirty work and jobs for him... I wouldn't recommend anyone buying this book at all... I could find alot more things to do with the pages of this book than just read it, then wipe my rear end with the pages... This book should be taken off the shelves of every book store in America, Mexico.
Restaurant Marketing.......2004-02-05
There are few books that exist on the subject of restaurant marketing. This one offers some broad suggestions and I respect the background and experience of the author. However, I felt it was missing specific actionable advice and was also light on content with under 100 pages of written content.

In 1897, Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto, in his study of the patterns of wealth and income, observed that the distribution of wealth was predictably unbalanced. He first discovered this pattern in 19th-century England and found it to be the same for every country and time period he studied. Over the years, Pareto's observation has become known as the 80/20 principle.
Now in 1998, Richard Koch takes a fresh look at the 80/20 principle and finds that the basic imbalance observed by Pareto 100 years ago can be found in almost every aspect of modern life. Whether you're investing in stocks, analyzing company sales, or looking at the performance of a Web site, you'll find that it's usually 20 percent that produces 80 percent of the total result. This means 80 percent of what you do may not count for much. Koch helps you to identify that 20 percent and shows you how you can get more out of your business, and life, for less.
Book Description
How anyone can be more effective with less effort by learning how to identify and leverage the 80/20 principle--the well-known, unpublicized secret that 80 percent of all our results in business and in life stem from a mere 20 percent of our efforts.
The 80/20 principle is one of the great secrets of highly effective people and organizations.
Did you know, for example, that 20 percent of customers account for 80 percent of revenues? That 20 percent of our time accounts for 80 percent of the work we accomplish?
The 80/20 Principle shows how we can achieve much more with much less effort, time, and resources, simply by identifying and focusing our efforts on the 20 percent that really counts. Although the 80/20 principle has long influenced today's business world, author Richard Koch reveals how the principle works and shows how we can use it in a systematic and practical way to vastly increase our effectiveness, and improve our careers and our companies.
The unspoken corollary to the 80/20 principle is that little of what we spend our time on actually counts. But by concentrating on those things that do, we can unlock the enormous potential of the magic 20 percent, and transform our effectiveness in our jobs, our careers, our businesses, and our lives.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book top 20% of books I've ever read. .......2007-07-22
This is a great book. Totally changed how I see my business.
It seems that I have always known of the 80/20 rule, but now I can see how to really use it in my life and business.
I've only read "Part One" of the book, but already I am forever changed and so is my business.
I'm so impressed that I am planning to buy the $80 audio program from Nightingale Conant because I really want to cement these great ideas into my thinking.
To sum up the book's main point in a few words would be, Spend 80% of your life and time on the "vital few" and forget or let someone else deal with the unimportant bulk or junk.
I know that that is really an over simplification. And is what I have always heard about the 80/20 rule, but the book is really an exponent to your thinking and understanding about the rule.
I know it changed how I see things and I fore see it having a good impact on my life and business.
Average book.......2007-05-12
The book has some thought worth thinking about; the writing style is not good, not easy to understand.
Things are not as simple as the author thinks - an overall disappointment.......2007-03-18
My expectations were high about this book but I was quickly disappointed from the first chapter on. The author thinks that he can apply a statistical rule dealing with imbalances in mass phenomena to individual and personal situations. He cannot provide practical examples, other than referring to mass phenomena such as quality control of production, and the book turns out to be a loose philosophical treatment. The author continuously refers to identifying the 20% of causes or inputs or actions, etc., that contribute to the 80% of the output and concentrating on them while he fails to see that this type of action may further contribute to imbalances. Percentage of influence in the final outcome does not directly translate to contributed value or importance. It may be the case, for example, that 20% of the parts of a plane contribute to 80% of its flying ability but one should pay great attention to some in the 80% that do not, like, for instance, to the landing gear, which does not contribute to flying. Furthermore, does the author understand why airlines keep on adding gadgets to the planes to entertain customers while those do not contribute directly to flying performance and are mostly part of the 80% imbalance? The author seems to underestimate the concept of "external benefits" and the fact that people and businesses often do things that do not directly contribute to output but do them because important external benefits are derived from them, like for instance when doing recreational activities or charity events. Overall, the author deals with a very complicated subject and tries to apply macrocosmic type statistical rules like the 80/20 rule to situations in microcosm, like the life of an individual or the performance of a small business. He fails to do so and his claims are largely unfounded but the book stimulates thinking and 20% of it worths reading.
20% Of It is Good.......2007-02-26
This is a reasonably good book on the Pareto (or 80/20) Principle that 20% of the customers, products, etc. produce 80% of the value in a given enterprise.
Interestingly, this book seems to follow that pattern. One can read the first chapter or two and the last one and glean virtually everything that is worthwhile in this book. In fact, the author even makes a case for that. He tells about how a tutor he had at Oxford told him to 'never read a book from cover to cover, except for pleasure'. That advice is very good for this book.
This principle has been demonstrated to have quite a bit of validity in business. The author tries to generalize this to virtually everything without really backing it up with data or even anecdotal evidence.
It is an okay book, but it is less than I had hoped it would be.
Time is not the enemy!.......2007-02-19
This is one of the few books I have borrowed from the library and then gone to a bookstore to buy a copy for my bookshelf. I love this book for its mind-expanding qualities - it is inspirational and provides food for the imagination. Written in an easy to read style, Richard Koch is both edifying and entertaining. I especially like what he has to say about time. In particular:
* Time is not the enemy. If we make good use of only 20% of our time, there is no shortage of it.
* Time gone is not time lost.
* We should aim to collaborate with time: `Insight and value are likely to come from placing ourselves in a comfortable, relaxed and collaborative position towards time'. [p163]
* Action drives out thought. It is because we have so much time we squander it.
* Be eccentric and unconventional with time - you can not conform to everyone's wishes.
* Under no circumstances give everyone a fair share of your time ...
... You may need to read the book to see how he came to some of these conclusions!
Whenever I find myself busy beyond belief it is good to be reminded that most of what I am doing is of low importance. However - when faced with one of those moments (or decisions) that are much more valuable than all the rest - it is helpful to be reminded, and encouraged, to `do something radical and stop tinkering around the edges'. I bought this book so I could refer to it whenever I feel I have lost direction or focus and need some sage advice. This book does not contain all the answers, and the theory only works to a point, but nonetheless it is a terrific 'thought jump starter' and I highly recommend it.

Customer Reviews:
Well Written and Very Comprehensive.......2007-06-26
This is an excellent book for those looking for a simplified approach to retirement funding.
A Valuable Case Study.......2007-05-12
I enjoy Ray's work. His book walks you through the financial planning process and clearly illustrates how it is done right. The first step of the process is factfinding and educating. The second is suggesting solutions. Ray's mastery of the process shines through and provides enough information to help you get started with your own plan.
Something for Everyone...........2007-04-05
This is an excellent book for the beginner to the more sophisticated person to consider when managing your retirement funds. Ray gives thoughtful insight into the potential investment strategies for three different "buckets of money". The difference in the 3 buckets is the time horizon the funds will be needed and the various amounts of investment risk that could be assumed in each time period.
His plan makes amazing sense and I have utlized it successfully in my personal retirement plan (I am 46 & retired) and my mother's (who is now 70 1/2). I have listened to Ray's business talk show for the past several years and also seen him speak at a free weekend morning seminar in Portland, OR. His personal judgement and that of his "brain trust" is safe, sound and easily followed.
I have purchased this book for myself and multiple family members/friends for their consideration. It has always gotten favorable reviews. I just purchased his newest book, "Ready..Set..Retire: Financial Strategies for the Rest of Your Life". I am anxiously awaiting it's delivery for any new information he has to share!
Finally a simple method.......2007-01-18
Whenever a financial advisor's starts to speak, I yawn intellectually. There are so many products and financial terms that I can't grasp it all. Enter Lucia with a plan so simple that even I can understand it. I loved listening to the "The Ray Lucia Show" and the book did not disappoint me.
"Don't run out of money before you run out of time"
Buckets of Money.......2006-11-05
I love the book. It's packed with solid information in a very easy-to-read format.
